Orr EDITORIAL PAGE OF THE TIMBER-CRUISER Student Needs "The purposes of Alpena Community College have grown out of the needs of the students, the nature of the community, and the belief that higher educational opport- unities should be available to high school graduates and other qualified individuals." "The full purpose of higher education lies in the contin- uing development of the student's understanding of him- self, of others, of his environment, and of his position and meaning in society." -College Catalogue The purpose of this editorial is to create a public aware- ness of the needs of the students of Alpena Community College for a Student Center. Every college has a moral obligation to create an atmo- sphere of understanding. The proposed Student Center would provide for this understanding. Over 200 of our students are boarding in this commun- ity. A Student Center would -provide cultura and ecrea- tional activities not previously available. It would provide for an exchange of ideas among the students. It is also our wish that the community should unite behind us in this effort. At the present time, such facilities are not available to -...__ the students. To acquire such-facilities would not only be an asset to the College, but would gain prestige locally as well as state wide. Such an asset would give students cultural environment and would develop Alpena as Northeastern Michigan's Educational Center. THE BEST FOR LESS AT NORTHEASTERN . Second Ave. ~fonday, November 23, 1964 Deans Column Alpena Community College with 575 students is exper- iencing the largest enrollment in its history. The most DEAN VAN LARE unique feature of this increase is the freshman class which numbers 311 full- time students as compared with the largest previous class in 1962 of 245. This is a 27 percent increase. The over- all increase in the number of full-time equated students is about 17.5 percent. Students at Alpena Community Coll- -ege come from 70 different high schools, from 10 states other than Michigan, from 18 Michigan counties, and from 2 foreign countries. This indicates a stud- ent body somewhat cosmopolitan in nature. Thus the college - as it desires to do - provides an opportunity for its students to learn from fellow students who have varied high school backgrounds and envinon- ments. Fifty-nine per cent of the full-time students are resi- dents of the enlarged district with 41 per cent from out- side the district. Of the freshman, full-time students 55 per cent are resident, and 45 per cent, non-resident. Open Till Midnight Ed's State Ave. Party Store 1010 STATE AVENUE The ratio of full-time men students to full-time women students is 71 per cent men and 29 per cent women. This ratio has ob- vious implication for the young women in the college. It also, however, creates problems for both men and women, especially from the point of view of proper bal- ance at social affairs. Students at Alpena Com- munity College are follow- ing 42 different curricu- lums. A few of the curric- ulum s involving the great- est number of students are teaching, technical educa- tion. business administra- tion, engineering, general educat ion, s ecretarial, lib- er aTarts, andconserva 10n. Schultz Chevrolet Co. It is interesting to note that there are over one- hundred - eighty boarding students at tbe college liv- ing in colleg-e-supervised housing in private homes. This suggests that the col- lege is well advised to give attention to the construction of a dormitory for boarding students. This problem is now - receiving consider- ation by college officials and the Board of Education. 11Chevy Service Center of the North11 US-23 North Join Our 1965 Christmas Club Now!
