Page 4 - THE TIMBER CRUISER, December, 1966 Lumberjacks Drop Four Straight Games Sports Review BY JIM O'NEILL Although the 1966-67 cage sea- Jacks were lacking in the shoot- aon is still young, the Lumber. jacks can see that in order to earn a berth in the winning col. umn by February, they will have an uphill struggle on their hands. After handily defeating the cellar.bound Northwestern squad in the opening game, the Jacks have run into trouble. Plagued by poor i,ebounding and a low shooting percentage, the team has beaten its last three times out. The ACC cagers we11e formida- close one to Delta Collegie,, 96.92, with the winning tally for Delta, coming within 30 seconds of the final whistle. Thie last two games, however, have shown just how much the team is lacking. Flint JC had little trouble chal. king up a win as they coasted w--::-::-:;...-,~b--,acks, who ooemingly were impotent, by a score of 92.76 on the home court. The ing department and became pro. gressively worse on the boards;. Flint dominated the entire game. Instead of learning from their mistakes against Delta and Flint, the Jacks managed to look worse in their last game against Lake Superior State of Sault Slle. Marie. The Sault squad scored a total of 88 points in the game which is certainly no great accomplish. me,n,t by MJCCSA standards, but it was more than enough to soundly defeat the Jacks. The Alpena five scored only 55 points the entire game, which can only reooive a very poor rating at best. Of those 55 points 35 of them were scored by two players. Calvin Hicks dumped 21 points and Dennis Blair managed 14 points. These are the only two player.s that scored in -doubie figures, or w:ere anywhere close to it for that matter. There is no doubt that this game will leave a bit•tie•r taste in the mouths of Coach McPhil- lips and his Lumberjacks for DRIVES FOR LAYUP -- Ken Panish (44) of AOC drives past Davenport's Lou Bok (3L1). Coach McPhi!lips introduced Lumberjack team members and cheerleaders, and gave a brier rundown on th1e .tactics seen in the Friday night game with Tra. verse City. Preceeding a few yells lead by the ACC chee·rlead. ers, an announcement of a local slave auction was made to the student body. A ticket purchased by a stud'ent would enable him to enslave a cheerleader for one of his st11enuous tasks such as shoe lacing or book carrying, etc. All proceeds from this auc- tion will go to the ACC "Spirit" fund.
