The Jacks easily de- feated Northwestern on their 1st outing -- by the score of 108-59. They walked past Mackinac Col- lege 103-52 in their second contest, and defeated Northwestern College again in their third game 109-65. Those impressive victories might look good on paper, but to what ex- tent were the Jacks act- ually tested? Northwestern ~ has never been a power- house in the MJCC and their quintet this year is no exception. Mackinac College, though a 4 year institution, is only in it's second year of inter col- legiate basketball competi- tion. The truth of the mat- ter is the Jacks have not been tested at all. The upcoming games against Henry Ford, Grand Rapids, Davenport, and Delta should give the Jacks a good chance to show their true ability. If the Jacks make a good showing in these contests they should have a winning season. But if they don't, I'm afraid the team will have a hard time mustering a mediocre season let alone a winning one. If the right combina- tion for a starting five can be established a winning s ecrst> should -prevail . DRIVING ISN'T DRIVE , DEFENSIVELY NORTHEAST AUTO MERCHANTS ASSOC. See: Serving Russell Wilson Resident Hall For Complete Laundry & Dry Cleaning Service ;Cuff's Quotes By Larry Link In the first annual Maroon and White scrimma~e held at the Alpena High School gym, coach Anspaugh s "Whites", by defeating Coach McPhillips' "Maroons" showed that the Lumberjacks will be a well-balanced team this season. If a lineup were chosen based on the performances of the players in that scrimmage, the starting five would be: Tim Lutes, Pat McDaniel, guards, Carl Jones, center, Ken Parrish, and Jim Yager, forwards. Lutes and McDaniel would be the guards because they performed well as a unit, unlike Thomas and Hicks who played as separate units. Did you know that the Virginia white-tailed deer gets more nourishment from the acorn than it does from any other native food? Next time you take a stroll through one of Michigan's National forests, take note of all the oak trees that are being "girdled" to make room for trees that are used in the lumber industry, such as Norway, and white pine trees. Naturally, it takes money, tax money, to pay men to destroy the oak trees and plant pine tree seedlings. All 6f this means that not as great a percentage of the tax dollar is being used to strengthen the deer herd as the Con- servation Department would have the Michigan public believe. With the close of the intramural football season, intramural basketball will soon be in full swing. Last season's champions, the "No. l's", minus three of last season's starters, seem unlikely to repeat as the league leaders. .- Although the Lumberjacks did well in their games with Northwestern, and Mackinaw, they are two of the weaker teams that ACC plays. It will be interesting to see if the Jacks have the same kind of success against Port Huron, and some of the other tough schools. When asked, members of A.C.C.'s coaching staff said that the college did not have the facilities nor the funds to field an ice hockey team. We feel they excluded two other ingredients; initiative and ambition.
