Lumberjacks defeated Oakland Auburn Hills Feb. 3rd at Hazel Park by the score of 99-89. . Now 8-3 in conference play, and 15-4 for the season, Alpena encountered . some difficulty with Auburn in the second half althorgh the Jacks were at on; time eading by 13 points. Lumberjacks romped to an easy win on their home· court, beating Delta College ll0- 82. The fabulous Lumberjacks . boosted their record to 13-4 on the season, and 6-3 in the M.J.C .C .. John Thomas was the scoring ace of the night with 35 points, but it was the bench depth that sent Delta to their 9th loss of the season. The Jacks started out slow, and were trailing in the first part of the game, 7-2, but bounced back and maintained their lead throughout to claim 1 their 13th win . I I Behind a 40 point scoring effort by John Thomas, who sank the tying and winning points on free throws with one second remaining in the ball- game, Alpena Community Col- lege whipped Port Huron, here, by the score of 85-83 . Alpena amassed a ten point lead in the first half, but blew its cools, and lost the lead for the first time, 64-63, early in the third quarter. With 4:37 remaining in the game, Port Huron led the Lum- berjacks by six points, 79-73. Not yet out of the game, eight quick tallies by the Jacks shot them back into the lead, 81-79. John Thomas finished at the head of the scoring column for the Lumberjacks with 30 points. Carl Jones was second with 27 tallies. Sophomore Vave Sparks came off the bench to can 13 points. By winning that game the Jacks are now 9-3 in the MJCC and 16-4 for the season. Th; Lumberjacks now have a second place berth in th~ MJCC and a strnng chance in the round- robin tournament. Coach Tom McPhillips' team took an early lead but the Flint team didn 't play dead. The Lumberjacks got cold from the floor and Flint bounced back and were t railing by only one point at the half. Flint continued . its surge , taking the lead in the second half. With seven minutes left Alpena steamed back, never t~ loose the lead again. Carl Jones and John Thomas were the leading scorers for the local cagers. Thomas had 25 points ; Jones finished with 23 . Ken Parrish was the only other Jack in double figures , ending up with 15 points, 9 of which came in the second half. Linden Robinson kept Flint in the game with 31 points.
