Page two THE POLEMIC Anaylsis Of Undergraduate Teacher Placement The Office of Teacher Placement, along with Chester A. McCormick, Director, and Paulette Grotrian, Assistant to the director at Wayne State University conducted this survey in an attempt to determine what demand there was for teachers in Metropolitan Detroit. Through this survey then, it was established, therefore, that there is definitely a need for teachers in the Metropolitan Detroit area . The placement picture for the 1,260 newly certified teachers during the 9/72 - 8/73 period is as follows: teaching contracts other wise employed grad study (73-74) homemakers unable to contact after 3 follow ups still looking Field of Preparation elementary art business distributive ed English journalism reading speech drama foreign t~nguage home ec industrial arts library science mathematics music instrumental vocal phys. ed/health science social studies special education TOTAL emotionally disturbed & learning disabilities mentally retarded visually, deaf, orthopedics *Factors influencing t eaching market : 1) decrease in birth rate i 71 9 2 2 9 93% 7% 100% *Need in Metropolitan Detroit surplus adequate - surplus shortage adequate surplus shortage shortage surplus adequate adequate adequ~te shortage adequate shortage adequate shortage adequate shortage surplus shortage surplus adequate # Students 895 113 25 25 113 1,171 89 1,260 2) inability to move outside of metropolitan Detroit ........................ ~ .................... ~ ......................................................................................................................... . MARK TWAIN . Keep away from people who try to be- little your ambitions. Small people al- ways do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. You can buy a man's time; you can buy his physical presence at a given place; you can even buy a measured number of his skilled muscular motions per hour. But you can not buy enthusiasm . . . you can not buy loyalty . .. you can not buy the devotion of hearts, minds or souls. You must earn these . ••• • • • •• •• • • • • • • • .. • •"k1rtt·. !,nior lnformfltion Dfly Held Students from Alpena Senior High were invited on Thursday, March 14, 197 4 to a college program Information Day at Alpena Community College. The program provided answers to graduating seniors about the college cam- pus and the different programs it offered. A general meeting was held for all stu- dents and then they were given a pro- gram, listing academic programs offered at A.C.C. and the building and room number where they could meet with a professor or teacher in that field. Two sessions were held to allow students to meet with professors in their first and second choice of interest areas. The program ended with a social hour which was held in the " Cave" in the Student Activities building where free refreshments were served. ttttttttttttttttttttttt ttttttttttttttttttttttt Fall, 1974 JOIN A CLUB? To incom ing col lege students, getting involved and fee li ng part of the college can be very meaningful. To help students better get to know each other and the campus life itself, A.C.C. has 12 organi- t ions or c lubs in operat ion on the campus. To be more specific, the 12 organiza- tions are: Alpah Psi Omicron (Sorority), Phi Sigma Beta (Fraternity), Circle K, Golden Z, Vets Club, Law Enforcement Club, Forrestry Club, Ski Club, Fisheries Club, Chess Club, Phi Theta Kappa, and Cheerleaders. The Fraternity and Sorority are two social clubs that strive for "sisterhood" and "brotherhood" respectively. A close relationship between each member is dev- eloped, and through this a shaping of the personality . Each ot these groups aid the community in various ways. Vets Club, is a service organization for veterans only , as the name implies. They sponsor vari- ous activities for the benefit of the com- munity . Golden Z, sponsored by the Zonta Club is a service organization whose goal is to serve the school, com- munity, and world. They do this by stag- ing events as the annual Snowball Dance, and Thunder Bay Classics . Circle K, spon- sored by the Kiwanis Club, does much the same as the Golden Z. Phi fheta Kap- pa, is an honorary fraternity that pro- motes scholarship and academic interest in the student body. Ski Club, Chess Club, Law Enforcemem Club, Forrestry Club, Fisheries Club, and the Cheerleaders, are social clubs where members join with others who have the same interests in common. These clubs also have various activities which they sponsor. Each and everyone of these clubs in some way makes a contribution to the school and community, and without them aspects of Alpena Community Col lege would certainly be missing!
