Alpena, Michigan September 1972 Vol. 4 No. 1 _ 1 ACC Hires New Interview With Dean Souden Among the new faces here at A.C.C. there is one which will probably stand out for the students . He is a man we should al l get t o know just as he wishes to know us. Mr. Dean Souden or as he has already been nick-named ; "The Dean" or "Dean Dean ," is the new Dean of Students. This interv iew shou ld gi ve an insight to Dean Souden and what he is like both as a person and as "The Dean". 1cmgan, gra rom ont1ac Northern High School, attended Olivet College and majored in Mathematics with a minor in physical education and has a secondary teaching certificate. Dean Souden also did his graduate work at Michigan State. After graduating, Dean Souden worked for Olivet in admissions, financial aid, placement and then went to the student personal area. While with student persona l he worked with student activities, housing and his last position was assistant Dean of Students. Dean Souden came to A.C.C. because he was looking for a school that had a more flexible and liberal approach to education. Personally Mr. Souden has a developmental approach to education and takes a very student ori entated position . He feels that "the student life on campus is what it's al l about , and if we aren't doing things for them and things to make them better off and easier for them to get the job done here academically, socially and everything else then we have missed the point of the whole game. I' m also very community oriented and I feel that an institution today has to be open and receptive to the needs, demands, desires, and wishes of the community." Putting all those things together, Dean Souden has a philosophy of education which is much more consistant and acceptable to a community college philosophy as its developed here in Michigan then private education could ever hope to be. When asked his first impression of Alpena Community College and the community itself, the Dean's immediate reaction was two fold . First is that A.C.C. has the right people to do the job and secondly the institution may need a "shot in the arm in terms of some new ideas." He feels that since he is new he can more easily see the college as a whole and possible seeing new things to add or change which will give the people that are here the pressures of just getting the whole job done. In regard to the community itself Dean Souden refers to a member of Alpena and his statement, "The people in this community are interested in investing in the future." Mr. Souden feels that this is what is happening here and is extremely impressed with "the hospitality the friendliness, the openess, the willingness to get involved, work and get the job done . It's a tremendous community, very proud. I think I'm going to like it here." Dean Souden's basic responsibility is to co-ordinate all the va rious offices within his office such as student affairs, financial aid, and counseling. "A b ig part of my job is going to be something I think has been neglected here only because they haven't had time to do it and that is Public Relations. " Another big thing the Dean would like to do is communi- cating the needs of the students to the administration and faculty, and to say to the students where the administration stands on the schools policy . "If I could see one thing happen , this time in 1973, I'd like to have the stucents walk out of here and look back and say" " Hey, I really had a good time! " The students are so concerned about Vietnam, welfare , and jobs; and rightly so . So concerned about all these other things and drugs and drinking and everything else that they forget that they've got a period of time which is two years here and maybe two years somewhere else where they have no other obligations. Its a free period of time and a time where they can really have a ball. I think that our office has to make that happen somehow. Part of it's obvious, we can bring concerts to campus, dances, speakers, and big ballyhoos and bashes. Coupled with that you've got to make the registration program so sophisticated so that the student goes through it and knows whats going on and when he walks out of here that doubt, "did I really get it done!" is gone. "This last year was really a worth-while, it was a good experience." Dean of Students Dr. Stoutenburg Addresses Students Dr. Stoutenburg is beginning his second year here at Alpena Community College. He has taken over the job of not only running a college but also re-building one. Included in th is article cou Id have been a formal picture, instead there are two pic- tures of Dr . Stoutenburg as he can be seen anytime someone walks into his office. The President of Alpena Com- munity College is a man continuously on the go, constantly working to improve your schoo l.
