November 1973 Nature Trails Developing Through the suggestions and help of the Buildings and Grounds Committee of Alpena Community College Faculty Coun- cil, ACC's campus will be improved, yet kept in accord with its natural surroundings. The members of this advisory com- mittee are Dr. Richard Moreau, Chairman; Mr. Russell A .. Garlitz, Forestry and Bio- logy Instructor; Mr. Herbert Gamage, En- gineering and Mathematics Instructor; and Mrs. Judith S. Beyer, Nursing Instructor. These four receive any and all suggestions to form a visual barrier between the Nat- ural Resources Building and the Besser Technical Center. This brings us to the third area of con- cern, which is the protection, preservation, and development of the immediate natural areas. The natural wooded area around the Natural Resources Building will be left in its natural state, except for the clearing of some of the underbrush and 'garbage trees ' . T his natura l area is and will continue to be used as an outdoor laboratory and classroom by students of Forestry, Field Biology, Botany, and other classes. Along with this third area of interest, there are ,proposed Nature Trails through- out the 800 acres of college land. Three possible trails that have been discussed are west of Pied Piper School, by the NEMROC saw mill, and north of Russell Wilson Hall. The trail by the dorm was used by the Cross-country team and Biology classes and is a winding path through the trees. These Nature Trails would be used by college students, by the local schools, and possibly open to the public once the trails are marked and the resources identified. There will be some areas for complete preservation without any nature trails for the people. A nature center has been pro- posed and may come into existence after Intramural Sports Building. The committee has made suggestions as to the possible locations and site development for the building. The second area is the natural resources around the current buildings on campus. This refers to the_ landscaping and parking lots on campus. A proposed parking lot near the Natural Resources Building has been relocated because the parking lot would have destroyed the natural area by the Natural Resources Building. This committee has already begun selecting the various Nature areas around the buildings that are not to be disturbed by progress. This includes the planting of trees, possibly pine and Lombardy poplar, from the faculty and any interested stu - dents on the improvement of the campus's buildings and grounds. They are involved in the planning of possible changes and ! reflect initial reactions to the possible .changes. , The committee is concerned with three major areas of interest . The first area is the development and location of new buildings. There has been state money appropriated for the pre-planning of an funding has been secured. Alpena Community College Alpena, Michigan Spring Semester Cutbacks Unlikely For the remainder of this school year there will be no more faculty cutbacks. Dean of Faculty, John Heimnick, termed the faculty situation as "tight", which means A.C.C . has the appropriate number of teachers for the size of the student body. The college could allow for a small fluxuation in enrollment either way, with the present staff. The drop in enrollment that caused the release of two teachers last September, came as a surprise to the administration. Last year's enrollment was up 12% over that of the previous year's. Until August, there was every indication that this year's enrollment would come close. But, then, several people who registered had a change of heart. This, coupled with the tranfers to other colleges, apparently caused the drop in student body. Classes such as History, English Com- position, and Languages, have been on a steady decline in the last three years. Vol. 5 No . 3 WHO KILLED J.F.K.? November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Since then, in the last decade, people are still asking "Who Killed J.F .K?" November 27, 1973, at 8:00 p.m., at Alpena High School Auditorium, a group of researchers, who have for years asked the same question, will wesent hundreds of rare slides. Included will be the suppressed Zapruder film, along with an in-depth verbal explanation of the past discoveries. The hour-and-one-half program will be followed by a question and answer period . The presentation entitled "Who Killed J.F.K?", asks, "Was he killed by a frus- trated loner, and for no reason? Why did two-thirds of the eye witnesses believe that the shots came from the front, when Oswald was allegedly behind him? Why does the Zapruder home-movie reveal the President being blasted violently back- wards? Why? ... . Why? ... . Why? .... ?" Find out on Novembe r 27, at Alpena High School--!
