November 1973 Butch Whacks and his Glass Packs gave a rock 'n roll concert at A.H.S. auditori- um on Halloween night. They turned back the hands of ti me 17 years, and took everyone present back to September, 1956, when they welcomed incoming Freshmen to Riverdale High. Mr. Whacks was attired in tight-fitting jeans with rolled-up cuffs, Hush Puppy shoes, a red-and-white letter jacket (minus the letter, of course), and a heavily- greased-back pompadour. The rest of the group was quite indescribable . I 'II Just say that they followed suit. The music played there was like some- POLEMIC thing from an "Oldies but Goodies" radio show. The songs, like "Get a Job," "At the Hop," and "Rock Around the Clock," are classics of the rock and roll genre . In them, vocals were strongly emphasized, and instrumentation was kept at a bare minimum. Even though they weren't a virtuoso instrumental group, their vocal arrange- ments were more than adequate, and they did a pretty good job of taking us back to those days of near-beer and getting it on in the back seat of a car. And, in a way, it was more than enthusing to hear the sounds that enraged parents "way back then!" Who Doesn't "Keep America Beautiful?" NEW YORK (LNS) -- Keep America Beautiful Inc. -- who coined the words "People Start Pollution. People Can Stop It" -- have a new ad idea . According to the public service group's executive vice-presi- dent, Robert Powers, "a high degree of awareness to the various pollution pro- blems exists now," and it's time to tell people that "individuals are not powerless to correct ecology problems. The new ad campaign will, according to Advertising Age, portray eight instances of people polluting through littering. In each case, a passerby will chide the of- fenders. But the people be.hind Keep America Beautiful ( KAB) do not follow their own advice. Formed in 1953 by some of the largest corporation heads in the country, KAB's board of directors to- day includes top representatives of the American· Can Co., Pepsi Cola, Contin- ental Can Co., the Brewers Assoc., and the Glass Container Manufacturers lnsti- tute--chief proponents of the profitable flip-top throw away cans and no-return bottles that this country is littered with. As Environmental Action put it, "KAB was formed by polluters to convince America that al I those unrecycled cans and bottles and all that excess packaging should be dis posed of 'properly.'
