. · 1974 BEHIND THE SCENES Terri Cubic Gary King THE POLEMIC Each year·at the beginning of the fall semester at A.C.C . a very important decision is made among students at Wilson Dormatory. For it is through a process of elimination that six students are chosen to be resident advisors. Any student interested in being a resident advisor, or in short an R.A., goes through a series of interviews, sessions, and screen tests with a staff made up of Mr . AIIBritten, Dean Souden, and R .A.'s from the previous year. Through this process students are then eliminated until a total of fifteen is reached, at which time six are chosen to be the resi- dent advisors for the year. · All the remaining studen_ts who had in the beginning tried out are available for assis- tance. The six R.A.'s from this group choose three students in order of preference in which one is picked to be their assistant . The new R.A. and assistant are then assigned to a floor at the dorm and are respon- sible for those students residing on that floor . They are "to keep the students in line" so to speak and handle any problem which may arise 24 hours a day. One of the resident advisors chosen this year was Terri Cubic, along with her assistant Ann Swan for the north wing. Getting her dorm fee paid is among the advantages Terri finds in being an R.A. She also feels that you've got to find out what's going on more easily around the campus, make lots of contacts with differant people, and a lso get more envolved with students. But as you find with any job, there are also disadvantages. As an R .A. T err i is expect- ed, along with any job, there are also disa ed, along with the staff, to be back early on vacations and also be th e last to le ave on va- cations. Also with this job they are responsible for answering the phones and getting up at all hours of the night for different reasons . And along with this too comes the prob- lems with orher students, for it is hard for them to understand that Terri and the staff are only enforcing rules that have already been made. Along with all this, more time is still put in . Every week there is a meeting which must be atended and any other important meetings which come up. Also every third night Terri must work in the office, which envolves making sure the doors are opened and closed on time. But Terri · doesn't regret any part of being an R.A. She says that she "wouldn't think of even discouraging anyone. from becoming an R.A. because it's colorful, there's never a dull moment, and there's always something to do". Another resident advisor chosen this year was Gary King along w ith hi s assistant Gary Parsons. Gary also has just recently been elected head R.A. of the South Wing, which makes him not only responsible for students on his floor but also over the R.A.'s on the other floors. Gary too has the advantage of having his dorm fee paid and also likes having a room to himself which allows more privacy. He also has the disadvantage of having to be up at all the late hours. For instance, when it's his turn on the weekend to work it means closing the doors at 2:00 a.m. and getting up to open the doors at 8:00 a.m., which doesn't al low too much time for sleep- ing in. And like any R.A., Gary too has to deal with students and the hassels about noise, the rules, etc. Students are always asking "Why?" and as Gary puts it: "We only work here!" Also when a R.A. must write out a ticket, it usu ally ends up being the R.A.'s word against the students, and is not easily settled. For Gary, attending the meetings is also part of his being an R.A. But he feels this is all good experience because he wants to be a high schoo l teacher and this gives him an opportunity to work with people and to learn to get along w ith people of a ll types. __ __;:..,_ _____________________ --, And to make things even better, Gary feels that this is one of the best staffs Doyle Distributing Distributers of: Pabst Blatz Drewrys Imported and Domestic Wines Rt. 2 - M-32 Phone 345-8700 THUNDER BOWL LANES yet and that they all get along very well. ##################### BEAVER'S Page 3 Student Senate Headed By New President Student Senate now has a new President Bernie Morasky.
