} J THE POLEMlC, February 1, 1977, Page 4 Library Tries New Check Out~Procedure Starting second semester the A.C.C. library will have a new check out procedure. . · Learning Resource Center Begins Operation This Semester The library is going to rent the Gaylord ~har~- ing System for second semester to see how 1t will · work for our library. If the check out procedure works good the machine will be purchased. The· machine is small and compact, quiet, and . only operates when a card is inserted into the card chute for dating. Features that are liked about the machine are its accuracy and speed. Accuracy is the borrower's card number and date due are printed on the book card. There is no transposing figures anc;I n9 eyestrain. · · This system is three to five times faster than by hand. When a student checks out a book, they will be issued an identification card that is wallet size, which they must present to the person at the desk when checking out books. The identification card contains the name of a student, name and address of the library, an ex- piration date, and a number on the card and metal that is attached to the card. The identification card is put in the machine and it stamps the number on the check out card which is put on file. A book card is also stamped and placed in the book so the student knows when the book is due. The Gaylord Charging System is 101 ½ inches long, 67 1/8 inches wide, and 61¼ inches high. Even though it is small, it can do the job. The Gaylord· Charging System is a s:u:cessful machine used in many libraries, in fact the Alpena · County Library is now using the Gaylord Charging System. Accord- ing to the director, Ms. Karen Riegle, "The Alpena Community College Learning Skills Center, which will begin operations during the 197-7 spring sem- ester, will offer students a place to go for help in improving skills in writing, reading and math." · The LSC is located in .the Natural Resources Building on the second floor, in room 253. It is scheduled to be open and staffed from 9 a.m: to 4 p.m., Monday th~ough Friday and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The LSC will be staffed with student tutors and faculty members. Any students interested in tutor- ing, contact Ms. Riegle. According to Karen, "LSC services are available to community members upon request." The Learning Skills Center will provide altern- ative educational experience and a supplement io regular classroom experience in the areas of read- ing, writing and math. It will offer individualized attention to the students . who need improvement //l//////////////////l(II//I/( with a branch to serve you1I Member F .:0.1.,c in writing organization, research paper construct- ion, spelling, vocabulary, getting more out of read- ing and how to take different kinds of exams. Students can walk in or be referred to the LSC_ by their instructors. The staff will then consult with the · student and the instructor to determine the student's needs and what action· will be most helpful. The Learning Skills ~enter is a classroom and "No Smoking" signs are posted. Due to the nature· of the materials and equipment there, students are . asked not to eat or drink in the Center. So far about 900 buttons have been sold but 1300 is their goal. The buttons sell for $1.00. Jim Allard was sworn in as the new president of Law Enforcement Club.
