The need for this program is the result of a law that became effective April l, 1992, . requmng commercial vehicle drivers to hold a commercial driver's license. Prior to the law, truck drivers only needed a chauffeur's license. hold the classes there. They have~ held classes virtually all over Michigan. There is no cost to the employers. The money from the grant is used for lodging, phone bills, mailing expenses, and traveling. _ The training takes approx- imately six or seven hours. "The grant entitles 16 hours of tra1nmg, but people usually don't have enough time for that many hours of training," Duncan said. The training program is not restricted to drivers who are employed by one company; the program is open to individuals also. The goal of the CDL BY SANDY PARENT STAFF WRITER A set of paints for Christmas · and a question "Where's yours?" were the deciding factors for a · successful and productive hobby. Terry Hall, ACC humani- ties and philosophy instructor, has taken his admiration and appreciation for art and turned them into a fulfilling hobby. . For about fifteen years Hall has incorporated art in his hu- manities class to help his stu- dents grasp an appreciation and understanding for the art world. When asked what the decid- ing factor was to start painting, Hall replied, "Humanities stu- dents are required to do an art project and one student asked, "where's yours, Mr. Hall?" Hall had not thought about paint- program is to train 300 people by May. They are nearly half way with 166 people through the training program. Duncan feels that they will exceed their goal. The Workplace Partnership itself is a federal grant program. The purpose of the Workplace Parnership Project is to assist employers in providing basic skill training for their employees. Reading, math, problem solving, and decision making are some of the areas that the WP Project deals with. The CDL program was awarded one of 11 grants nationwide. A commercial vehicle is defined as one that transports 15 or more people or that carries more than 2,600 pounds, such as a semi-truck or bus. ACC's Don McMaster, communications specialist, tutors the knowledge section preparing students for the state administered test. "Classes are offered to Michigan companies that need training for their truck drivers," explained Jeff Duncan, grant coordinator. Hall has been painting full- time for about one year. During the summer Hall spent approxi- mately fifty hours a week paint- ing, but now that college has resumed, he tries to paint three nights a week, plus weekends. Hall's paintings were shown at four art fairs: Alpena, Grand Lake, Sault Ste. Marie and Harrisville. Hall feels that these shows were beneficial to his suc- cess as a painter. The shows gave him insight as to the likes and dislikes of the public. Hall chooses his ideas to paint from everything around . him. For instance, his current series is taken from the designs of the Ruka Pottery, a Japanese wood-fired pottery. It is not the design itself but the line structure of the design .. "I paint abstraction, but not total ab- straction," states Hall. "I like to combine opposites, organic lines and horizontal lines." Hall's next series will entail the \ i.ne abstraction of cave paintings. A new artist takes a new step in his career when he has his first one-man show. This will happen for Hall on October 15, when he shows his works in Roscommon at Kirtland Community College. Hall was selected by Kirtland's art department for this presenta~ tion.
