The c~mpetition w~ tough for 'the 'Jacks as three teams: Lansing Commun~ty College, Macomb Community College, and Oakland Co~umty College, were ranked first, second, and fifth nationally. ~ga1nst the strong competition, Mark Samp placed twenty-third in a time of 27:25: He was followed by teammates Bill Garant, fi{ty- second place m 29:20; Tom Cieciorka, fifty-fifth place in 29:40· "Mono" McDonald, sixty-fourth place in 37:29. ' 'I_'he cross country season usually ends with Regionals, but this year 1t had a new ending. Head Cross Country Coach Rob Roose felt that Mark Samp 's time could be competitive on the national level. On November 13, CoachRoosesetoutforCanadaigua, New York, with Samp and Mark's parents. The race began at 11 a.m. and finished at noon. Mark placed eighteenth, only one minute behind the winner in a time of 28:56. The course was covered in three inches of snow. For Mark, that was not the only race of the day. He and his ~nt~urage immediately jumped into their vehicle to get back to Alpena m time for the opening of deer season.
