1 ~POLEMIC Vol 2, Issue 6, December 111992 I Letters to the Editor I Advisor's Note: The Polemic staff is very grateful for the input from the Letters to the Editor column and Students Speaks regarding the publication of unsigned letters. We have checked The Alpena News policy and various jour- nalism texts. After much discussion the following major points have sur- faced : (1) Students are graded. Stu- dents need services from admin- istrative 'and support staff. N ega- tive attitudes toward the student may not effect these grades and services. However, many stu- dents feel that this might happen and therefore hesitate to raise an issue that needs to be addressed if their names must appear in print. (2) Persons ought to "stand behind" opinions they express. (3) We are delighted with the interest shown toward our news- paper demonstrated in the time people are taldng to express their opinions. We're being read and we love it. We would hate to institute a policy that might in- hibit this kind of response. Therefore, it is the decision of the current Polemic staff to continue, upon request by the writer, to publish unsigned let- ters. However, as always, we never publish a letter unless we know the identity of the writer, and we will release that name to "concerned" parties and persons who have direct involvement with the letter. Dear Editor, In your latest issue I read that Dr. Newport was adventurous enough to "visit Germany." I feel it may be a mistake for our college president to work in a country that can't hold a success- ful march against RACISM. Also, events and news reports of the Racially Motivated attacks there on foreigners are most dis- · heartening. I hope Mr. Newport will be most cautious about who he deals with over there. Human- ist Not Racist. Cordially, Donald Pilarski To my fellow ACC students, As I read the last two issues of The Polemic, I was somewhat amazed at the attack directed to- ward the snack bars. I realize these childish complaints must have come from a small minority of unthinking indi- viduals who do not have the ability to use their head before they open their mouth. In. the last issue, seeing as how you didn't have the guts to sign your name to your letter, I can only guess as to who the author may have been. After reading these letters, I can only assume they were penned by a bunch of spoiled, yuppie brats who have been pampered by Mommy and Daddy since the day they were born and haven't got a clue about real life. Well, here's a chance for you to take a reality pill. First of all, if you don't like the . food, or o ' t_,i,,A...._ . ..... e prices, go somewhere else. If you are one of those people who has a mouth totally devoid of taste buds and would rather · go to McDonald's for a hunk of over-COQ~ed shoe leather in- . stead of having a bowl of Jean's delicious · soup, go for it. I'm quite sure Jean is not going to lose a moments sleep over the fact that you didn't come in and buy a damn candy bar. If this is too inconvenient for you, there is another option. The last time I looked in the student handbook I found noth- ing that said it is forbidden for a student to bring his or her own lunch. I know this means you may have to drag your happy butt out of bed five minutes earlier, but I'm sure if you whined and cried long enough Mommy and Daddy would be more than happy to pack you a nice little lunch in your G. I. Joe or Barbie lunchbox so you can happily skip off to school. That way you wouldn't have to spend all your allowance at that "nasty" snack bar. Secondly is the issue of Jean's "negative" attitude. It's hard for me to speak on this because I don't see it. I spend a lot of time at the Van Lare -snack bar and Jean always greets me with a smile and a "Good morning, Steve." If she isn't too busy, we even engage in some friendly conversation. Maybe it's time fo.r you adoles- cent morons to take another reality pill. In the real world, respect is a two-way street. Just because Mommy and Daddy love you no matter how obnox- ious you are doesn't mean the rest of the world is going to do the same thing. You don't de- serve to get respect until you are willing to give it. Perhaps if you treated Jean with a bit more respect, she just might return the favor. Finally, I do have one com- plaint about the Vari Lare snack bar. I usually arrive on campus ':/ : a e o the morning the snack bar is clean and organized. It's a com- fortable place to sit down and have my morning coffee. How- ever, by 10:00, the pigs arrive. The tables are littered with empty pop cans and paper. The floor is covered with trash. The chairs are scattered all around so you need a map to get from one end to the other. It is not Jean's job to pick up after a bunch of spoiled two ·year olds that are too damn lazy to pick up their own mess. If someone came into my home and. made a mess, and then got up and walked away, I wouldn't invite that person back to my home. I only wish I had the same authority at the snack bar. You people are supposed to be adults. It is time you grew up and realized that Mommy and Daddy have lied to you. Despite what they have told you your entire life, the sun does not rise and set on your perfumed and pampered little butt! Signed, Steven Maxwell · Students Speak Do you think that letters to the editor published in The Polemic should have a signaure? Billy Anderson Yes. I don't believe that it's correct for someone to make I a statemoot without having I to put their name behind it : to hack it up.
