w ~POLEMIC Vol 2, Issue 7, January 21, 1993 Letters to the editor Dear Editor, I am very disappointed with the entertainment column in the last issue, particularly the cri- tique of Bram Stokers' (not Stroker, a misspelling found in both columns) "Dracula." Anyone with any basic idea of film knows that film is a director's medium. Anyone who knows anything about Francis Ford Coppola (Apoca- lypse Now, Ihe Outsiders, and the Godfather movies /, // and ///), would understand his use of epic truism in the portrayal of a subject matter and would not expect a "gruesome tale of slaughter," nor would anyone who read the original novel that this movie is based on. Anyone who saw the trail- ers for the movie would have seen the names of the stars mentioned in the article. Anyone who has been down- stairs at the State Theatre more than once realizes that the theatre needs a new sound system. Anyone who has any in- sight would realize that Coppola's "Dracula for the nineties" has a timing purpose (as do all his films), a time of plague. Anyone who has heard any of Wynona Ryders' discus- si'tlns of her role in th~ film would know that she took the The Polemic would like to begin this semester by announc- ing that we are a newspaper published by students for stu- dents. Any input is welcomed. We have several regular columns which allow for stu- dent input. One is Action Line. This regular feature answers questions which students have asked us, dealing with campus procedures, fees, rules, and many other things. For our Students Speak fea- ture, located in the Opinion Section, we send a photogra- pher out with a camera to ask random students a question. In the past, this feature has stirred up a bit of controversy. We also_ accept letters to the editor. We feel it is our responsibility to print each let- ter we receive, but we cannot print a letter unless we know part because the movie dealt with a blood disease similar to AIDS. Anyone who knew this, would have the insight to see Dracula not as a wimp, but as someone courageous, not want- ing to pass the disease he carries to the woman he loves when he sobs, "I can't, I'm sorry, I can't." Anyone who writes a cri- tique based on taste should take a humanities class offered on campus where it is taught that taste or ones personal prefer- ence has nothing to do with an interpretive, descriptive, or evaluative criticism of form, content, inexhaustability, and particularly structure. Anyone can even take the time to learn what those words mean before he shares his thoughts with the student body. Anyone who takes all of the above into consideration may save four bucks in the future or at least feel that he has not been cheated out of four bucks amanwo ead over one hundred years. Then again, the staff writer who wrote that piece of so called journalistic criticism isn't just anyone. Remembering this is an institution of learning, Dan Smith the identity of the writer. We prefer to publish signed letters, but we will withhold signa- tures. We are obligated to release the names of letter writers should someone ask it. We have installed a drop - off box outside The Polemic office for your convenience. Feel free to leave your Action Line question, letter to the editor, or other suggestions there. You may also leave correspondence in our mailbox located outside the BTC office. Correction: In the Decem- ber 11, 1992 issue with the story about Sandra Kennedy's basket we2viag, it was stated that she learned her basket weaving on her sick days. It was supposed to be stated that she learned her basket weaving , during her vacation days. Sorry Sandra! Students Speak The new semester has yet to bring a contro- versial issue for students to address in Students Speak. Therefore, we asked students what they thought the biggest problems on campus are, and what changes they thought should be made.
