Maybe movies might motivate students BY Scorr REED POLEMIC EDITOR Student apathy is out there, and it's not going away any time soon. But why? Is it because there's "nothing to do around here? " Well, we all know that isn't true, but while dig- ging through the old Polemic archives, I found this campus used to have quite a few more recreational activities for the student body. For instance, in the April 25, 1979, issue of A CC Campus Update, there's an article telling what movies are showing on campus. Whoa! Back up! Mov- ies on campus? That's right. Movies used to be shown for students in room 150 of the Natural Resources Center. That got me to thinking of all the activities we could have, but don't. I'm not saying that some of the activities we have now are bad, but I do see room for improvement, or is it · that darn student apathy poking around again? What if we had movies on campus again? I don' t mean they pack 'em in! I visited a friend of mine up there a couple years ago, and "The Doors" was showing in room 105 of J amrich Hall, a room similar to NRC 150. The place was so packed, I had to sit on the floor. There were similar sell-outs at show- ings of "Animal House", "A Hard Day's Night" and a Three Stooges film festival. That would be a fantastic idea for ACC. Show a free movie for students - and their families - on the weekends. Just designate a day sometime in the semester to be "Fifties and Sixties · Day," and watch the costumes people decide to wear to classes. It would be just one of those little things to break up the monotony of the every- day schedule. Of course, that infamo s apathy plays a big part in whether or not an activlty looks bad. Take for example, casino night last year. It was a bust. Not because it wasn't fun, but because for some reason there was no big push for students to go. So, would it matter if we changed direction and of- fered different activities for students? Who knows? It may be worth trying. Maybe this year we should forget about casino night and have free movies for students, a scavenger hunt, a battle of the bands. But let's look into it one step further. In one of my classes last semester, a student suggested to change campus activities to some of the above mentioned ideas. The response that she got was along the lines of, "Yeah, but think about it. Most students on this campus are older and have jobs and families." So what does that mean? That older students can' t have fun? Working people can't have fun? There are students in that category who still may have the time to enjoy some new activities. Also, what about the students who don't have children? What about the students who aren't , married, and do have the time to enjoy themselves at some campus activities? As I said, there is plenty to do on this campus. It's just a matter of doing it, if you can. But why don't the students who can, take advantage of it? Is it because the activities ACC has are "boring?" Or is it because some students just don't care? Anyway, this year I'd like to see the activities on this campus changed completely - just to see what would happen. ' letters to the editor Dear Editor: I am a prisoner on death row at the Arizona State Prison and was wondering if you could do me a favor and run an ad for Dear Editor: If students want to know where the hold-up is with the library on the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base they should look . no further than Oscoda Twp.
