ti.}~[])@@~[)□ ~u@ _____________ _ College catalogue creates inaccurate picture of ACC campus From the January 29, 1971, issue of The Polemic. BY POLEMIC STAFF To a person who has never seen Alpena Community College and has only read the college catalogue, a visit to the campus might be quite disillusioning. One might expect that in choosing pictures for a college catalogue, the rationale would be to give prospective students some idea of what the school has to offer. The pictures in the ACC catalogue, however, in no way present an accurate view of our campus. Only one of the six pictures in the catalogue was taken on campus, and this picture, of the collegiate singers, was taken against a cement block wall, certainly not a feature unique to our campus. One picture is an artist's conception of the proposed Natural Resources Building. The caption reveals that the building is proposed, but it is doubtful if the construction will include the 30 foot elms and the clear stream pictured in front of the building. In any event, it seems that a picture of one of the buildings already on campus would give the reader a more accurate idea of what to expect. Another picture is of a basketball game being played in a large, well-lighted field house. The visiting student would soon discover that all we have at ACC is field - no fieldhouse. The visiting student will also discover that we don't have the large auditorium where graduation ceremonies are pictured taking place; nor do we have the statue of three lumberjacks stepping over a log. That is 50 miles away on the AuSable River. The final picture .:.. or rather map - is the most deceptive of all. According to the map, our campus includes the Wildfowl Sanctuary, Alpena General Hospital, and extends north halfway to Rogers City .. The visiting student will find that, what looks like the center of a big campus on the map, is in real life a field with waist-high weeds and lots of stones. The rationale used in selecting pictures for the college catalogue seems to have been that a false image must be created because no one would come to ACC if they saw it like it really is. This may be true, but a catalogue should have at least one picture of campus . This is what we may see ii the rationale for the '71 • '72 catalogue is maintained ... Parking lot paving begins From October 28, 1976. BY POLEMIC STAFF On Monday, October 11, 1976, work began on the stu- dent parking lot at A.C.C. After several years of planning the in- famous sinkholes of the student parking lot will be a thing of the past. With final deletions and ad- ditions being made at a special meeting of the Intermediate School District Building and Grounds Committee on Thurs- day, October 7, the plans for the new parking lot were sub- mitted to the Board of Education.
