During the pilot program, which began in September of 1993, 18 ACC faculty members, nine community agency and school representatives, and 59 ACC students were involved in Service-Learning. The students provided over 1,000 commu- nity service hours in nine locations. The program has been made highly successful due to hands-on projects consisting of ,math and English tutoring in local elementary schools, senior ·citizen mentoring at a local nursing home, and several addi- 'tional projects. Service-Learning at ACC has worked so well, in fact, information about our program has been requested by several colleges across the country. With the commitment of time being as little as an hour each week, college students have an opportunity to develop skills and abilities through hands-on academically-based ser- vice. Students may receive classroom credit for their service to the community. Additionally, they are given documentation of their hours which may be required by some schools as a prereq- uisite for graduation. Even if a class does not offer a formal option to use Service-Learning as a basis for academic work, the Service- Learning coordinator can often arrange for such options with an instructor when the proposed service work relates directly to the academic material of the class. If you are interested in volunteering as a tutor for an hour a week, or if you have an idea for a project, call Julie Smigelski, the Service-Learning coordinator, at 356-9021 Ext. 373. For the next two years, this'· space will be reserved for little tidbits of this and that (as the title suggests). Anything I happen to feel like sounding out on, anything I think is catchy, practically ANYTHING will appear in this space by me. ■ Notice the folios of the paper this year? Those circles seem to me to be the eighth wonder of the world. I love them!! What do you think? Not that I had anything to do with them. No-o-o. ■ Fall colors are beautiful, aren't they? I have a friend who's down in Florida going to school, and the one thing she asked me to do is take pictures of the trees here. Right now they're in their full splendor. You never realize what you have until it's gone, do you?■ Along those same lines, take a break and go for a stroll over at Island Park. The colors are beautiful and it's a wel- come rest from everyday stress. ■ Every so often, invite the person in line behind you to go ahead of you. They'll be surprised and it will give you a good feeling. ■ Need something to do but don't have a lot of money? Student activity fees go towards a large amount of activities including "The King & I" to go up October 26-30 and running it's second weekend November 3-6. Check the story out on the entertainment page in this issue of The Polemic! ■ Feeling lonely? Why not volunteer? The Volunteer Cen- ter is always looking for someone to donate their skills. You can choose what you want to do and how much time you're willing to spend. It's a great way to meet new people and it looks good on a resume! Contact the Volunteer Center in Besser Tech for more information. ■ Have something you'd like to see in The Polemic? Just drop it off in room 110 in BTC. One of the staff members will be glad to work with you. If no one's there just drop a note in' the drop box or give us a call at Ext. 264. We're always looking for fresh ideas for stories. ■ Wasn't it wonderful for the staff to have an in-service day when they could run around and "work" while eating at potlucks and gnawing on donuts? When do we the students get a chance J to come to school without any staff? Just a joke! Don't get worked up! ■ Halloween is here! That exciting night of ghouls and goblins. Hopefully, Mother Nature will cooperate and we'll have a comfortable night for the little ones (and even the big ones)! ■ Isn't that snack bar lady in BTC great? I know I appreci- ate her warm smile and attitude when I'm having a bad day. Just a short note to say, Kathy you' re appreciated! ■ Are you a giving soul? Feel like playing Santa this Christ-· mas? The Alpena Volunteer Center is once again running their Christmas Wish List program. They match request for gifts with people who wish to donate a gift in the spirit of Christmas. The deadline is December 5 so if you're going to contribute you better get on the ball, huh? Or, maybe I should say the sleigh? ■ Aren't birds wonderful? Isn' t it wonderful how we have. to dodge land mines everytime we walk from building to build- • ing? It's no one's fault really and it's not something that can be controlled but don't you wish there was some kind of bird repel we could spray? Maybe if we had a big cage all around ACC? Well, it was just a thought. ■ I've been peeling and coring apples all weekend making apple sauce. It suddenly struck me - a new philosophy on life - when life hands you apples, make applesauce. It didn't work as well as the original however and so I forgot all about it. ■ Well there we go. This is the kind of stuff you can expect to digest while scanning my column. I hope you enjoyed and if you have any ideas make sure and drop me a line or give me a call at The Polemic. I need all the help I can get! .. Kadrich Used Cars ~ Alpena, MI 49707 139 Ripley E. L.
