_Th,_Po_1,m_1e_• .. _ _._.,_' N_••_m&_er_1s,_1,,_s ____ · t-------@OOG-O[}~q_)(ill@@SB Scarlet falls short BY JOEL PoTRYKUS STAFF WRITER The first feature-length motion picture of Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic, The Scar- let Letter, since the 1926 silent version recently opened na- tion-wide. It claims to portray Hawthorne's work, but this modern production is loosely based on the original. It stars Demi Moore in a well-cast part as the defiant seamstress Hester Prynne, who is publicly outcast for giving birth to a c;hild out of wedlock. Gary Oldman plays the strong-willed Reverend Dimsdale, who suffers through deep-rooted guilt and self-punishment. He is the unknown father of Hester Prynne's infant daughter, Pearl, and is burdened with his immoral sin and must deal with the pain of keeping his dark secret from a community that has high reverence for him. Robert Duvall is cast as the sinister Roger Prynne, whose character is under- played and represented as a hateful villain who has no though~s other than revenge. This film is filled with vivid, colorful images of thick forests and stunning seaside cliffs, but lacks the elements of good storytelling. It deals more with the initial relation- ship between Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimsdale. ·Word arrives that Hester's husband, Roger Prynne, has died at sea, and she is immediately over- whelmed with desire for Dimsdale. She bears his child and each of them hold this se- cret to themselves. In the original, Hester's husband returns to the city and then changes his name to Chillingworth. His return is seen, but there is no mention collegiate crosswo.rd 2 3 4 5 . 6 7 9 10 11 12 of his name change in this ver- sion. He feels he must avenge his wife's betrayal of conceiv- ing a child with the r€verend while he was at sea. This picture fails to cap- ture any deep emotion or self-conflict. A low-budget PBS version of The Scarlet Let- !§:, which aired in the early eighties, contains much less glamor, but displays Dimsdale's tremendous guilt and torment from Chillingworth, which this lat- est film sloppily avoids .. The true shock is deliv- ered in the final scenes, with a completely divergent end- ing. This vei:sion brings a happy finale which severely contrasts with the disastrous, unhappy ending of the origi- nal. Roland Joffe's vision of The Scarlet Letter delivers cin- ematic power, rom~ce, and epic scenery. But it lacks true emotion, character develop- ment, and falls far short of bringing to life T'! a thaniel Hawthorne's timeless master- piece. This is their second record, appropriately entitled, Return of The Rentals, and they have now hit the mainstream, with the video for the song "Friends of P." appearing as a buzz-dip on MTV. The Rentals are led by Matt Sharp, also the bass player for one of the leaders in the nerd-rock movement, Weezer. He is assisted by fellow Weezer member Pat Wilson, drummer. Petra Haden, of the trendy female-led band that dog, provides violins and backing-vocals, along with three other young mu- sicians who aren't afraid to experiment in the ever-changing field of "alternative" rock. Sharp's relaxed vocals set the stage for this happy-go- lucky, nutty band. The Rentals don't take themselves too seriously, and don't try to cover-up their image with combat boots, blue hair, or flannel shirts. They're the kids that got Used picked-on in grade school and now they get their revenge. The Rentals' sound is very distinct, sounding like The Cars covering appropriately, a Weezer song. What separates The Rentals from typical bands is their use of moog synthesizers. These instruments were recovered from the era of Devo and Men at Work. Two moog synthesi:z- ers are used, taking lead in every song, giving them a quirky eighties-retro edge. ·sharp's deadpan voice, along with Wilson's simple drumming, allow the synthesizers to take charge over the solos also. "Waiting" is one of the album's best songs. The intro uses a lively moog riff, and then a punchy, thumping verse. Each song is a melodic blend of thick guitars, deep bass, laser-like synthesizers, and sparkling female vocals. Modern rock is beginning to wander back to the sound of its predecessors. The Rentals capture both the 90's loud guitars, along with an overwhelming 80's tone. Musicians aren't afraid to experiment, and The Rentals are dabbling i~ a field that most'bands today shy away from. Nerd-rock is now a reality in music, and Retu}n of The Rentals is solid proof that it exists. All 23 Plant again signal 34 Town on southern 25 Certain doctors, tip of N.J. (2 wds) for short .
