With Head Coach Mike Kollien and Assistant Head Coach Tracey Gribble running the show, it looks to be a very promising year. The Lady Lumberjacks are coming off a (5-9) conference record, finish- ing sixth in the conference last year. Last year's team, with four sophomores and 11 fresh- men, was very young. Last year's team was really talented "It took us . a while," says Kollien. "We started off good, then hit a dead area in the middle, but finished very strong. We had some talented players both inside and out. It took us a while to start working together, but once we did we played very well." The Lady Lumberjacks ended up 8-14 overall, but six of those games down the stretch were decided by four points or less. This year's team has seven returnees, but lacks height and inside players ac- cording to Kollien. They will have to learn to adapt to play a different style of game than they did last year. "We're gonna run, we're gonna press, we're gonna ha- rass, we're obviously gonna attempt to go out and out work the other team," states Kollien. "I would like to see us win ten games." An obvi- ous · goal would make the tournament, says Kollien, 95-96 Sara !RJ)acfi 4 Sophomore 5'5" Guard Central Lake High School HS Coach - Dave Carleton Sara is the quickest player on this year's team. She will be called upon to do some ballhandling and provide some scoring for us this year. She will need to be an aggres- sive player on defense, and try to create some turnovers. If she does that the team will benefit. Her added strengths, quickne.ss, and improved shooting will allow her to play more minutes and be a factor when on the floor. !Marianne 'lJowtfe{[ 34 Freshmen f , ¥ defense on the perimeter in or- 5' 10" Forward/Center Mancelona High School HS Coach - Bob Wilcox Marianne is going to play the post this year. She is a better then average rebounder who has . a knack for knowing where the ball is going. If she can develop a couple of offen- sive mqves from the post side she will be a much greater threat. 'Tracey (jri66fe Assistant Head Coach der for us to be successful. She ~s the type of player that can adapt to a number of dif- ferent situations. which is every team's goal. Specific goals for this year, according to Kollien, are to win ten games, work harder than the other team, be com- petitive in every game, make the tournament, and put on a good show for the crowd. Ten players is a good number because it will give all the kids the opportunity to play. The coaches are very comfortable with the ten play- ers they have, according to Kollien. They will get to know each other better on the court and be able to work to- gether as a team because they are going to be on the court a lot together. Last year's Lady Lumber- jack team had 15 players. Kollien says he was working people in and out and it was hard to get continuity. Kollien L !l{ac/,d'Iatrow 20 Sophomore 5' 5" Guard St. Ignace High School HS Coach - Rick Ledy Rachel will be asked this year to come in and play a smart but aggressive style of game that will rattle the other team. She has improved her jump shot and with the added con- fidence she has shown so far we can see her seeing some valuable minutes. Susan 'Big/Jer 40 Sophomore 5' 7" Forward St. Ignace High School HS Coach - Rick Ledy Susan is the type of player who always seems to make good things happen when she steps out on the floor. With added confidence and an im- proved jump shot we will be looking for Susan to play more minutes at a number of positions. feels with ten they will have more continuity because they all can play. This will lead to more team balance and more teamwork. Kollien feels the most im- portant thing for this year's team would be for the seven sophomores coming back this year to stay on track to gradu- ate after two years. "I would like to see them walk across and receive their diplomas, that would be great," Kollien says. From a basketball stand point, Kollien expects the team to work hard, never give up, get the job done, un- derstand their roles, play buzzer to buzzer and see good things happen through hard work and positive attitude. Come out and support your Lady Lumberjacks. You don't want to miss them play. 'Bodni 'Watts 22 Sophomore 5' 7" Guard/Forward Roscommon High School HS Coach - Ron Britton ~odhi is a very energetic player who will be called upon to be a leader this year.
