Day Care continued from page 1 is not in yet, but Doyle, Wagner, and English are beginning to understand what ACC students need. This process is also involving research into licensing re- quirements and regulations, equipment, facilities needed, and hours it would be open. The three students are exploring alternatives for staffing such as work-study students, practicum for Developmental Psychology (PSY 226), volunteers, and paid staff. "It's a big job, bigger than we have time to do right, but we're learning a lot about ACC's needs and, of course, writing propos- als," commented Doyle. PHOTOS y OLEMIC STAFF Area high school physics students from Hale, Alcona, Hillman (two teams), Alpena and Rogers City came to ACC. last week for the annual Physics Olympics. Alpena High won the overall award. Above, students make music from a line of bottles. Below left, a pendulum measures forward momentum. More than ·meets the eye at NRC BY LYZ HUFFMAN STAFF WRITER Recovering from the end of World War II, a new sense of fear swept over the Ameri- can people. In the early S0's, the fear of nuclear warfare loomed overhead. A "Cold War" was going on. People built hideouts deep in the ground called "bomb shelters." The threat of attack was very real. My dad recalls his part in this battle, as a boy of only twelve. "I had to stand outside, and every time a plane flew by, I had to count how many engines it had." · The Natural Resources Cen~er used to be a bomb shel- ter, according to History pro- fessor, Wes Law. If you enter the main entry of the NRC, you may notice a door, between the stairway, and the first floor entrance. Many people put up small structures in their backyards, and bigger hideouts were put up by cities and towns. Some of these shelters had running water and a bathroom, others did not. The NRC shel- ter is typical of these in that it housed a dirt floor, no running water, and no bathroom. Fortunately , there was never a use for this, and we can only hope there never will be.
