Le May finds personal development in leadership Creatjve w1'iting buffs had a special treat March J 2,, and 13, when Mr. John VandeZande, writer and professor of cre- ative writing at Northern Michigan University, spoke Thursday evening at ACC and again Friday morning. Writing is a serious hobby of VandeZande's and he shared his experiences and information concerning this acbvity with an audience of 17 ACC members of WAFB and Alpena campuses. He gathers ideas for his short stories, . through personal observation and develops set- tings from Michigan and Wisconsin areas. Analyzing and discussing one of his published short stories, "Night Driving" open- ed a questjon and answer ses- sion. Coinmenting, "I think everybody's a writer. We all have stories to tell." VandeZande urged those who enjoy writing to do so or else they'll "miss the pure joy of writing." He felt some peopl~ were misinformed about writing. "A person doesn't have to have the whole story before before they write it down. Working in the dark is a part of writing." VandeZande paraphrased Frank O'Connor throughout the discussion stressing, "Get black on white." He recommends, "try to work with the story; let it help you." Admitting some of his own stories go through 15 rough drafts until final com- pletion, he warns, "Be pre- pared to rewrite and rewrite." Giving valuable suggestions to those interested in writing, VandeZande repeated some advice he nonnally extends to his creative writing students. "Lay out your typed story in front of you and I0ok at it as a whole." In trus way an author will visually see what direction the story is taking and in what form. The Senate took action on pro- blems brought before them by only a few persons, thereby having the decisions being made by a minority instead of the majority. Students need to get involved to have an effective senate. · The Senate is to provide leader- . ship, : and the Student Activities Board, SAB, is to help promote morale for the students·, according to LaMay: The Senate also provides representatives for the Judical Board, Board of Review, and Curriculum Committee, as well as handling the funds allotted to the students through the SAB.
