What does it have to do with ACC? Pied Piper is Alpena- Montmorency-Alcona School District's center for education of the district's challenged individuals from the age of three to the calendar year the individual turns 26. "For the last four years, since the beginning of the Registered · Nursing (RN) Program at ACC, the RN program and Pied Piper have been interacting," reports Carol Hart, the RN who oversees the assignments at Pied Piper. The overall directer of the Nursing Program is Helen Malandrinos. There are 25 nursing students who will be over at Pied Piper, two at a time, two days per week this semester. All but one is female. "Only seven males have gone through the Pied Piper program," stated Hart. The goals of the program are for the students to observe and compare the development of a challenged individual with that of a "normal" individual, also to observe the techniques used by staff members to promote growth and development in the challenged individual. According to Hart the program promotes increased understanding and confidence in future dealings with challenged individuals. Nowell Petrus with a smile The first snow fall of the year may bring mixed feelings to many people, but for Nowell Petrus, a foreign exchange student, it will bring about a big smile. Petrus, a freshmen student at ACC, has never seen snow before. He is from the country of Micronesia, which is located between Guam and Hawaii. Petrus , said, "It is hot all year round." Micronesia is made up of four states, and Petrus is from the state Truk, where they speak Trukese. In Truk, Petrus Ii ves on the island of Ta. Petrus commented, Ta's population is only about 200 people. Describing his home town Petrus said, "It is a very tiny island, about nine miles long, and 200 meters wide, in some areas you can throw a rock to the other side." Petrus has been in Alpena since August. Before attending ACC he went to school in Texas for one semester at Corsicana. Petrus said, "I picked Alpena because I heard, in Texas, that it was a nice place," Petrus came to the United States to study, he said, "I just wanted to explore the world." Petrus is taking general courses but plans to major in political science. When asked why political science he stated, "In my country it is needed, and I am interested." Commenting on Alpena, Petrus said, "It is fantastic; I feel like I am around friends at home." In his free time Petrus said he studies a lot, something he did not · do at home. Besides waiting to experience his first snow fall, this will be Petrus's first Halloween. Before coming here he said, "I never heard of Halloween." Petrus, by taking a chance to learn, is expanding his knowledge of America, along with learning new customs. Those who reach out to him and learn more about him will be able to take a journey without even leaving the city. ................... ...........................................
