Many activities have been planned for the carnival, some of which include: Friday, Feb. 9 - Ice sculpture judging which will take place at 4:00 p.m. - A spaghetti dinner sponsored by the VFW Post on Connon St. will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Costs for the dinner are: adults --$5.00, children ages 5 to 10--$2.50, and under 5--free. -"A Taste of Alpena", featuring appetizers of local foods from the Cooperative Extension Service, will be hosted by the Jesse Besser Museum from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb.10 -A Pancake Breakfast will be served from 8:00 a.m. to 11 :00 a.m. at the VFW Post on Connon St. Costs for the breakfast are: Adults - $4.00 children ages 5 to 10 - $2.00, and cHilcfren under 5 - free. -A Sno-ball Softball Tournament sponsored by . the March of Dimes will take place at the Alpena Men's Softball Fields from 9:00 a.m. to dark. -From 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. the North American Team Barrel Jumping Championships will be held at the indoor ice rink at Mich-e-Kewis park. -From 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. there will be a trick barrel jumping exhibition also at the indoor ice rink. Featured at the exibition will be Pierre Bernier. -A dance will be held at the Alpena Sportsmen's Club from 8:00 p.m. to Midnight. For those divers who are certified, and would like to try an Ice Dive, Bill and Ruth Ann Beck will be offering a course prior to the dive. The Alpena Sherrifs Department will also be practicing their underwater recovery operations. -At 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., the Alpena Figure Skating Club will hold an exhibition at the indoor ice rink at Mich-e-Kewis park. Three members of the Hiawatha Figure Skating Club of Sault St. Marie have been invited to perform. Also performing will be former Alpena resident and figure skater, Tammy Stott. Other interesting events will be, on Friday, Wertz's Warriors will stop in Alpena on a leg of their snowmobile trip to raise money for Special Olympics, and on Saturday, the Alpena Bass Club is sponsoring an ice-fishing tournament. The tournament weigh-in station is at the Long Lake County Park Pavilion . Weigh-in times are between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. There is no pre-registration and no entry fee. The entertainment tent at Mich-e-Kewis sponsored by the Alpena Exchange Club will be opening on Saturday at 11 :00 a.m. and closing at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, the tent will open at noon and close at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's outdoor activities include such things as logger races, snowshoe races, cardboard toboggan slide, horsedrawn sleigh rides, pony rides and people-sled races in which the people are the pullers and the dog is the "captain" of the team. For the outdoor activitites of the weekend there are no entry fees and no pre-registration. Admission buttons are available at the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce and will be available at the carnival. Price of these buttons is $1. FIGURE SKATERS TO PERFORM On Sunday, February 11, 1990, the Alpena Figure Skating Club will hold an exhibition as one of the events of the Alpena Winter Carnival held at the Mich-E-Kewis indoor rink. The old Mich-E-Kewis shelter and outdoor rink were formally opened on December 23, 1934 at the present site . The first carnival was held at the rink on Jan. 24-27, 1935. Figure skating facilities have come a long way from . the skating exhibition which was held on the Thunder Bay River on February 12, 1933 between the Ninth Avenue power-dam and the D & M railway bridge. A troupe of nine Detroit area skaters entertained the public. Local youths competed in skating races according to age. Fifty seven years later, approximately 25 ofthe 112 member Alpena Figure Skating Club will entertain the public with group and solo routines. Members of the AFSC vary in age from four to seventeen to "I'm too old to tell my age!" Three members ·of the Hiawatha Figure Skating Club from Sault Ste. Marie, will also be performing. Tammy Stott, a former resident of Alpena and the AFSC, has passed her Pre-Juvenile Freestyle, 1st Figure, and Pre-silver dance. Twelve-year old Lisa Schwuterson is a gold medalist in Canada and the USA. She has passed her 4th Figure and the Novice Freestyle. Keri Schwuterson is Lisa's eight-year old sister. She is working on her Silver Dances and has passed Pre-Juvenile Freestyk and her 1st Figure. .
