DAVID BROWN Staff Writer Some people might be wondering why soccer was chosen to be the new sport at Alpena Community College this year. The answer is two fold. First, Ryan Townsend, ACC Student Senate Vice-President (and ACC soccer player), raised money for jerseys and equip- ment this year. Introducing soccer to ACC was also an easy decision for the Student Senate because of the results oflast year's Student Senate survey. Men's baseball was also a choice on the survey. Though baseball was a popular choice, baseball in Northeast Michigan is not practical. With the baseball season extending past the school year, Alpena is ripe for rainouts/snowouts. The rain out rule states that one~ a game is rained out, the game has to be played the next playable day. Therefore, that is more money that the school has to spend. In ad- dition, it is difficult to find playable days in Alpena in the spring. Other sports like football were also an eco- nomical challenge. High priced equipment and the lack of a football field made football an impractical choice. Mr. Lindsay and Dr. . Newport both agreed that soccer was the best choice for A.C.C. Soccer brings di- versity to the sports program, more student interest, and a connection with the students and the community. LUMBERJACKS SOCCER REVIEW DAVID BROWN Staff Writer The ACC Men's Soccer Club Team started their inagural season with an impressive win over Oakland Community College followed by a hard fought tie on the road against Lansing Community College. In the season opener, ACC thumped heavily favored Oakland Community College 6-2. The Lumberjack's offense featured a balanced attack that included goals from Andy Keller and Josh Kumrits, as well as excellent goaltending from Ryan Baker. The Lumberjacks made the long haul to Lansing for their second game of the year and dueled Lansing Community College to a tie. A goal off of Lumberjack goalie Ryan Baker's outstretched fingertips with under two minutes left tied the game that ACC had led 3-2. During both overtime periods, each team muscled the other with physical play that earned a Lansing player ejection from the game (red card). Andy Keller scored two goals on route to the 3-3 tie. ACC's next game features a rematch with Lansing (Oct.6 at Home) that is sure to be an old fashioned grudge match. Photo off Soccer.com James Gwillian Staff Writer • President Bush un ed the sporting world to move on after the tragedies on September 11, 2001, but the players wanted the week off to grieve. Over 38 years ago, the National Football League decided to play football just 2 days after the assass_ination of President Kennedy. The current NFL commissioner, Paul Tagliabue, chose not to make that same mistake. After the tragedy, the media wanted to attack someone for being disrespectful in any way. But Mr. Tagliable decided it wasn't going to be the NFL. • Replacement referees? NFL referees demanded on an increase in salary. After negotiations, they were offered a 60% increase in pay, that plan was rejected. Just before the start of the season, the league withdrew their offer of 60% increase and elected to use replacements. Several players have suggested there will be added danger on the • • playing field with inexperience refs. There have been some flags thrown late in games, but no serious complaints from the players, as of yet. Football'contains a "relief valve" for missed calls on the field, this means each team has the right to challenge a referee's call in question. This "relief valve" is very reassuring to both players and coaches. Once the officials are signaled that a call is being challenged, the play in question would then be reviewed at the instant replay station. This "relief valve" does have its limits. If a none of the camera angles show beyond a shadow of a doubt that the call was incorrect, the call on the field stands. According to ESPN's "Power Rankings," the Denver Broncos are at the top of the charts followed by the Baltimore Ravens and the Oakland Raiders respectively. The Detroit Lions are not off to a great start. The starting quarterback, Charlie Batch, has already been replaced.)Jy Ty Detmer. Johnnie Morton, wide receiver, is catching the ball and doiqg a good job. Once the new quarterback gets comfortable in Detroit, the passing game should become more effective. This in turn should free up the Lion's running back, James Stewart, he will be able to show his true colors. With the new head coach, Marty Mornhinweg, it is not assuring when rumors fly of him not knowing the wide receivers names yet. The season is long from over and Lions' fans can still hope for a playoff spot. Rebel Motorsports 11240 West 517-785-2975
