The Lumberjack VERIZON: MAKING ITS WAY SCOTT JOHNSON Staff Writer Alpena Community College and Verizon will be teaming up in the near future to offer students the unique opportunity to gain experience in the telecomm u nica ti ons industry. The starting date of the program is unknown at this time, but the college would like to have it going by fall 2002. It was Verizon who first contacted ACC about the possibility or installing such a program here. Logo off Verizon.com This interest was due partly to the utility tech program that is already here, and also the lack of trained entry-level technicians throughout the state of Michigan. According to Dennis Harmon, Ma,nager of Regional Operations for Verizon, due too the lack of technicians, there are outstanding employment opportunities across the state; including the Alpena area. Once Alpena gets this rolling, they will be the only facility in Michigan to train individuals for such jobs. News A College Day For Women1AtACC SONIASAUVE Staff Writer On October 6 th , 2001, Alpena Community College will be holding its gth Annual "A College Day For Women." · A ·college Day for Women is devoted to helping them discover themselves. The participants can find new friends and find out more about Alpena Community College. This event is to let women know that ACC is here and that it is never too late to continue with an education. When the program developed eight years ago, there were only 100 participants. Today the number of participants has to be cut off at 250. The presenters at this event are local volunteers. Participants can attend this · event at a reasonable rate, thanks to the many donations from the community. The 14 people who chair this event are community members and ACC staff. ACC may not be the only committee members, but A CC supports this event full fledge. The chairpersons come up with many ideas for this event by incorporating what they know with people that they know. The day starts with the keynote speaker, Victoria Valentine, at 9: 15 a.m. Miss Valentine is a veteran of radio and television. She has assembled an authentic replica collection of First Ladies' inaugural and ball gowns. Miss Valentine is now known as a · definite source of information about the First Ladies'. She entertains and educates people from coast to coast with her wonderful and poignant stories, as well as a beautiful slide show of her collection. The first of three sessions begins at 10:25 a.m. Choices for this session include: "Getting Pants That Fit," "Yoga Gonna Love It," "Drug Information For Women/ "Healthy Holiday Traditions," "Selecting and Caring for Roses in the Home Garden," "Basic Estate Planning Update," "Pulling Your Own Strings," and "Science & Religion: A Dialogue". Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. until 12:50 p.m. Entertainment is to be followed by the . St: Paul's Women's Trio who will provide an eclectic musical program. The second session begins at 12:50 p.m. Choices for this session include: "Free E-mail for Everyone," 'Wellness Center: Health and Fitness," "Thyroid Function and Health," "Com Husk . Dolls: Part 1," "Fresh and Fragrant Flower Arrangements," "My Grandmother's Story: Multiculturai for Women," "Confidence to Act; Act for Confidence," "Faith Development," and "If You Could Only Do One Thing". The third session begins at 2:00 p.m. Choices for this session include: "Pigital Cameras and Scanners: The Latest in Digital Imaging Tools," "Genetic Testing for Breast Cancer," "Reiki-Energy Medicine," "Corn Husk Dolls: Part 2, Creative Ideas for Kids," "At Home with Nature," "Japanese Feminism: Traditional Image and Reality," "Winning Strategies for Women- the Power of Investing in Your Future," and "When I am an Old Lady, I Shall Wear Purple". ll Page2 STUDENT SENATE: NEW FACES . HALEYROMEL Staff Writer Betts, Secretary, is a sophomore and became involved in Student Senate to make an impact on future students. This is his first year in service and he hopes to make the most of it. He wants to be heard and give students an ·opportunity for their opinions to be heard as well. Shaun is majoring in Computer Science, and is a shooting guard on the ACC basketball team. Some of his goals are to raise the level of involvement of students and to have new, updated Other Student Senate members include Sophomore Representatives Joshua Brege, Phil Mesa, Krystal Beyer, and Victor Kann. Freshman Representatives are Heidi Miller, Mira Dejova, Jonathan Brege, and Audrey Haske. The Student Senate meets every other week and will announce any open meetings. Their office is located in the student activities room in the CTR. They are here to help you make ACC a better place, so stop by to voice . your concerns, ask questions, or justto say "hi".
