Six sophomores have returned bringing a year's worth of experience and guidance to the four new freshmen. The team lost a few players at the beginning of this season, butthe remaining ten are doing well. matched up against larger and more dominant teams. Starting on September 27, the team gets very busy with away games. The volleyball team is strongest in their defense, but needs to develop a setter. LaBar said this would help the team and definitely make a difference. The new volleyball team actually has two liberos, Mandy Vekaryase and Alicia Kleiber. This rule has already been in effect in Canada and has made a difference in their playing as well. "This year I'm looking for a highly competitive team with an overall winning record I think we may get it." LaBar said. Before corning to ACC, Mackenzie was active in her high school in Manistique, (upper Michigan) and was also a big role player in the American Red Cross. During her two years of participation she was made President ofFundraising and President of Public Relations. Public Relations consisted of going to various businesses in the community and inviting them to donate items the Red Cross would need in case of emergencies. They would be reimbursed for these items later. Also while working with the Red Cross, Mackenzie was a team leader and recruited other students from the high school and adults in the community. She also said that the Red Cross is one of the best and most helpful sa er relief programs ainly because it is rldwide and has such a lo g history. Besides working for tlre Red Cross, Mackenzie spent her summer doing manual labor at a limestone quarry, Port Inland, in her hometown of Gulliver, Michigan. She decided to come to ACC mainly because she has friends in the area and it's pretty close to home. She enjoys oldies music and hip hop, and is one of the staff writers for the Lumberjack. You will see more of Mackenzie as she scores some serious points,on the volleyball and basketball teams. Volleyball Coach Dana Labar stated, "Mackenzie is a great asset, not only to the game but also to the other players." In the future he sees coaching as a possible past time, since he has been involved in sports for a good portion ofhis life. His team, Alpena High School Wildcats, went to the state finals and he can still vividly recall the overall experience of that final game. Carpenter enjoys Carpenter considers himself an easy-going guy, which is one of the reasons he feels he would be a good teacher. He also really enjoys working with kids. The fact that he would be making money in the process would be a definite bonus.
