ADMISSION Admission to the college is granted to persons 18 years of age or older who: • have a high school diploma or GED or • have a satisfactory reading level as measured by ACC placement tests or • enroll in specialized training programs not leading to a degree or certificate. These guidelines apply to admission to the college only; admission to a specific curriculum or course is based · on student interest, achievement and test · scores necessary for entrance into the particular program or course. High school seniors who have the recommendation of their counselor or principal may be admitted for two courses, or up to a maximum of eight credit hours per semester. PLACEMENT TESTING The ASSET skills assessment measures the level of a student's writing, reading and numerical skills and is used to make recommendations concerning course placement. Results may indicate the need for instruction through The Learning Center to increase the student's basic skills and success in college level course work. The ASSET placement test is required for: • all new students who . do not have a high school diploma or GED and • all new students who register for nine semester credits or more and . • all students who fot the · first time are registering for an · English or math course. ACC can help · you get started Pursuing educational goals is challenging at any age, and since Alpena Community College is here to help students succeed, we provide a number of services to address some specific needs. Women's Resource Center, located in Van Lare Hall, is adjacent to the female counselor's office. If provides a place for small group meetings, includes a phone for personal phone calls and features informational literature, video and audio tapes. Fall semester programs, open to both women and men, include a parenting work.shop and a weekly brown bag luncheon with infonnational presentations on ACC services. The Learning Center, VLH 127, offers free tutoring and credit classes such as "Becoming a Master Student," which teach skills necessary for college success. (See the course schedule for LSC 110). Basic education courses in reading, math and English are available for those who need to improve those skills in order to proceed with . college course work. . Fatl Semester UPDATE .
