CAMPUS UPDATE, Oct. 27, 1978, Page 4 Student Feature Kathy Ryan By Elizabeth Littler Kathy Ryan is the enterprising young woman whose sleek design: was selected by the news staff for the paper’s new nameplate. Originally from Flint, Ryan grad- uated from Flushing Senior High Seleel in ee ns fall she en- lied ceramics, as we sociology. Ryan lives with her grandparents in Hubbard Lake. In the year be- tween high school and college, she lived in Florida. It was during this time, working in photography, freelancing in art and bartending that she decided her career in art was going nowhere. She felt she needed more training and wanted to establish more connections in the advertising community. yan plans to attend the well- known Center for Creative Studies. in Detroit. She will apply for scho- larships, grants and any financial aid available to help her achieve her goal of furthering her educa- tion. Like many students, Ryan finds money hard to come by, so, she makes her own clothes and bar- tends at the Hubbard Lake Tavern 40 to 45 hours a week. The money pays for art supplies. Ryan can‘t remember deciding to be an artist. ‘‘It‘s the only thing I’ve ever done,” she states. The ranch of art she prefers is advertising design, with photogra- phy and silver jewelry work com- ing next. She enjoys the creative and expressive release of working with her hands. “‘I like to make a subtle statement. Not everyone will understand, but if-a few do... Riegle attended Michigan State University and recieved a B.A. and M.A. in English, and an M.A. in English, and an M.S. in read- ing. After graduating, she went on to work at Lansing Comm- unity College for 2% years, teach- ing in the same area of work she is currently engaged in. Active in the Educational Special- ist Program at MSU, Riegle would eventually like to have a job plan- ning out and setting up similar programs at the state level. < Riegle enjoys working at the L.S.C., but said she gets frustrated when people think it’s only for “Dummies.” “It’s for all people that aren‘t as efficient in one sub- ject as they are in others.’ Hobbies that she enjoys in her liesure time are collecting books, cross-country skiing, playing board games, quilting, and sewing, (in- cluding making stuffed snipes) ekends have never felt so good.
