Ti < JSigagaengr: SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS: TENTH STRAIGHT WIN Lumberjacks vs. Schoolcraft Ocelots By Len Gabrysiak After dropping a game earlier this season to Schoolcraft, the ACC Lumberjacks played host to a pack- ed crowd at East Campus gym last Wednesday night as they downed the previously undefeated Ocelots by a 75-68 count. The win was the tenth straight for the Jacks as they moved into a tie for second place with a 7-2 record. The Schoolcraft Ocelots held first place with their fine 9-1 record. As Coach Steve Schray’s Lumber- jacks came onto the floor, it. was Alpena‘s Dale Beard hit one from 15 feet out to put Alpena up: by four. At this point, Schoolcraft called time out, only to discover they had gone over the limit and were assessed a technical foul. Earl Buckingham converted the foul shot and Alonzo Weatherly added a late bucket to make the final margin. Mark DeSmet was the big man off . the bench as he hit on five straight buckets after missing his first two. Dale Beard added 17 points, fol- lowed closely by Earl Buckingham with 14 points. The outside shooting of Dale Beard with 26 points, Earl Buckingham’s 18 and Chris Harris’ 13 was all-important. But, so was the inside work of Alonzo Weather- ly, who dumped 11 of 15 field-goal attempts and finished with 26 points. Oakland’s Kurt James, a 6'7” _ center, was devastating against the Lumberjacks collecting 32 points and 15 rebounds. All of James’ 13 goals were from under the bucket. Johnny Reel added 14 for the Raiders while Anthony Barnard and Walker D. Russell each had ten. Russell who was a high school All- American at Pontiac Central last ear was scoreless in the first half against the defense of Rick Nielsen Alonzo Weatherly, ACC’s lead- ing point-maker.
