CAMPUS UPDATE, November 7, 1979, Page 2 Editorial Traveling between BTC and NRC buildings at ACC. at the beginning of the semester, students. may have had a chance to view the beautiful, blooming bed of roses. Yet have you ever wondered who. arranged for the flower bed or who tends to it? Dale Ilsley is the man in charge of. Building and Grounds; he arranged for a little added color’ and life for’ our campus, through the rose gar- den. A touching story lies behind the rose garden. A few years ago Mr. Ilsley fost his son and the fa- culty gave him a donation for a “memorial. IIsley being very concern- ed about the ACC campus, decided to use the donation towards a flow- er bed. Not only is the flower bed beautiful to look at, but IIsley. has brought many smiles to the female employees at ACC. Whenever the bushes start to blossom he clips the buds and presents them to different ‘offices. We know we are sad that the rose season is over, but we can be cheered at the thought that they will be here again next year to grace our walk to the NRC. If you have not had a chance to see the flowers try to arrange a slow walk by the. ~ NRC where the now-bare rosebushes fisley for all of us at ACC for his thoughtfulness. In no way during the interview did I state (as was attributed to me) that stu- dents had “mostly .bad” attitudes! When asked what | felt was the rea- “son more students needing help did not seek it, | replied ‘‘Attitude,’’ ex- Pplaining that many times students have had bad EXPERIENCES in learning which have given them a poor self image. Consequently, they fear failure and are reluctant to seek help. | also said most people have far more potential than they give themselves credit for and that we start with students at their own level and work with them to help them ACHIEVE their potential. I’m sorry all the interviewer got out of that was two words and those misused! Giving a totally wrong inference to the interview! Another serious error was in the assumption that student tutors “‘ce- ordinate the LSC programs”. At no time in the two years |- have worked here has that very important task been delegated to students. We have a very capable and dedicated direc- the ren R oversees them daily and is always available for help and recommenda- — tions. Often, | have even called on her after hours and found her totally responsive. To say the tutors do her work is like saying that secretarial work-study students “‘direct’’ the work done in the front offices! Let’s give credit where it is due. Reporting needs to be objective as well as factual; let’s keep it respon-- sible too! x Barbara J. Sumner Editors’ note: We would like to apologize for the wrong impression given by our choice of words in the LSC article. How- ever, it is our opinion that the article on.the whole, gave the LSC an appealing warmth that would encourage ee to. seek help mere: =! A Bunch of students, Tee feed his house lost night!
