A wee WIRE - He 2 AUR ~ Winter Ca nival Weekend Cross Country Skt Race Wheeler The cro ri 1982's “Alpena Winter Carnival was a success in spite of sub-zero weather. % The race was held Sunday, Jan. 24th, behind Russell Wilson Dorm, and organized by The Ski Rack in Alpena. The run was five km (ap- prox. 3 miles) and took 20-30 min- utes average time to ski the track. “The skiers were real pleased with the track this year’’ said Don Elgas, race chairman and manager of The Ski Rack. Out of 22 entrees, ages ranged from 8-43. Elgas also _ stated “Everyone gets something besides cold.” Everyone who fin- ished received a certificate. Out of 14 age catagories, eight won a gold medal for first in their age group, and everyone received a gold, silver or bronze certificate. Mark Werda had over all best time of 16.35. Gold medal winners were: mens age group 11 years and * under, Brian Plume with a time of 28.03, 12-15 years, Chris Campbell 19.54, 16-19 years, Bill Fitch 18.33, 20-29 years,Mark Werda 16.35, 30-39 years, Paul Bray 19.49, 40-49 years, Charley Rosebush 21.35. In the women’s division, age group 20-29, Andria Plume 30.06, 30-39 years, Chris Christopherson 25.14. The pace setter, Wayne Christo- pherson had a time of 16.32. No problems occurred this year, except warming up and thawing the icicles from the eye lashes. The Forestry Department came up with Paul Bunyan standing over a fallen tree to win a first place prize in the college division Snow Sculpture Winners by Donna Gillard + prize in the College Division Alpena Old Fashion Winter Carnival Ice Sculpture Contest on Saturday, January 23, was the ACC Forestry Club. “Days of the Lumberjack’ artfully depicted a Paul Bunyon size lumberjack standing over a fallen tree. Braving the cold in the prize winning effort were Forestry Club members Scott Spangenburg, Dan Demitroff, Ed Gilbert, Dawn Graves, Bonnie Boyer, and Pat Joyce. Second place and $75.00 went to U-Physics class for their clever design of “Nickel Beer’’. Huron Cement used an ‘old Alpena days’ - theme for their first place entry of The Alpena Ice Company Alpena’s Old Fashioned Winter Carnival was a great way to have the cold and have a good time while doing it. The low temperatures didn’t keep many away and we hope this insures the success of any future winter carnivals. —Editors The Physics class built a huge beer keg which received a second.place prize
