April 4, 1973 THE POLEMIC Page 3 New Course Proposed For Summer Session by Myrna Woodley In the beginning . . . but where and when was that beginning . . . was it on the 26th day of November in 1856 when Alpena became a city, or was it many years before? Richard Clute, ACC in- structor, would like to delve further into the history -- the archaeological pre-history -- of Alpena. Alpena, because of it’s re- moteness, is one of the very few, areas in southern Michigan that has little done in the way of archaeological re- search. Alpena Community College itself is the location of an important prehistoric site . . . but little or no excavation or studies have been made. lute has recently proposed a course in ‘Archaeological Methods” to begin Summer Session 1973. The class 1) participate, locate, and identify all sites known in Alpena. 2) participate in an independent and systematic survey of Alpena Coun- ty with the students locating new sites. 3) site testing and collecting. Recover- ed artifacts will be placed in Bes- ser Museum. 4) students will learn basic site sur- vey methods and excavation tech- niques. They will become acquaint- ed with the pre-history of the Great Lakes area and follow-up with a gradual interpretation of the pre- history of Northern Michigan. No major digs have been planned for the opening session of the course. But according to Mr. Clute, an actual dig could take place the following summer if suffi- cient evidence such as pieces of pottery, flint, and other artifacts are discovered and warrant a dig. Alpena is waiting to be uncovered, and rediscovered -- if approval is given, actual would involve 10 or 12 students who studies could begin this summer with the would: Archaeological Methods course. We can all have a chance to wonder when we remark, “That really happened?!’ The POLEMIC once again brings you .. . HIGHLIGHTS OF 1970!!! PARKING LOT ACC students certainly seem to be get- ting their daily exercise lately .. . swim- ming through the parking lot. Oh, yes, swimming and sidestepping the mud. It isn't too bad on cold days, though; then « you can skate! But watch it! That ‘ice can be slippery, you know. Some stu- dents have had to learn that the hard way .. and | mean hard!! Seriously, though, isn’t it about time we students stood up and demanded bet- ter conditions? Not only in the student parking lot, either. What about our side- walks? When questioned as to the possibility of additional sidewalks and an improved parking lot, Mr, Perigo recently stated that ‘the administration’ understands the rea- sons for the complaints of the students, but that at the present time, it simply isn’t feasible to think about any improve- ments or additions to the campus com- plex. The reason for this is that on June 8, 1970, an election concerning expansion of the college will be held. Until the out- come of the election is known, nothing can be done either to improve the current sor- ry condition of the student and faculty parking lots or to augment the sidewalks. In conjunction with this, Mr. Perigo stated that the student parking lot is a temporary parking lot, and therefore, it will be very likely not be blacktopped within the next ten years. Are we students just going to sit around and do nothing about this situation? Ad- ministrators are willing to listen, and if enough students complain forcefully, yet sensibly and frequently enough, to these administrators, something will be accom- plished. re you going to be one of the group who complains about the condi- tions and then sits back and does nothing to improve them? So what are we wait- ing for? (Reprinted from a 1970 issue of the the POLEMIC). Highlights of 196411! EASTER BUNNY ARRIVES EARLY While the mayor, city hall, and police department were asleep last Saturday night, Peter Rabbit paid a friendly visit to the Alpena Community College. The giant bunny (approximately 16 feet high and 6% feet wide) traveled all the way across town and leaped upon the college roof without being seen or reported. How such a feat could be accomplished is be- yond anybody. The rabbit was last seen at the shop- ping center Saturday night, but, lo and behold, early Sunday morning he was sit- ting on the college roof. At the time, Pete was brushing up on his accounting over roont 101. (Van Lare Hall). Currently, Pete is on the math- ematics curriculum. It is reported that he is doing very well, and that he has his mul- tiplications down pat.
