December 16,1987 a Page 7 Basketball Women's TB Classic With a score of 75-68, the ACC women's basketball team defeated Gogebic on Friday, November 20, at EAC. Beginning the game with a slow start, the Lady Jacks strengthened their offense in the second half, making more rebounds and pulling ahead to victory. Despite late foul trouble, ACC still played well enough to Win. Tabatha Koger led ACC with 26 points followed by Marla Spring who aided her team with 17 points and Priscilla Cross who had 15 points. Koger's excellent rebounding during the game helped to insure her team's success. ‘on Saturday, Novermber 21, where. they played Glen Oaks. ACC vs WAFB Alpena Community College dominated Wurtsmith AFB in men's basketball action Tuesday night with a 105-64 victory. Top scores for the game were Andre Reams with 23 points and Richard Gamble with 20. Luberjack head coach Jim Barbera said, " It was really good practice and all the kids got to play." The men's team will play admittance to the MESSIA. What types of extension courses and programs are: there? According to Rick Counsellor, counselor at ACC, Lake Superior State College is the college that mainly offers extension programs on the ACC campus. LSSC offers what is called "three plus one" programs,which involve an agreement between LSSC and ACC that students can complete four-year degrees in certain programs by attending ACC for three years and LSSC for one year. The “three plus one" programs that are currently offered are: ART RECEPTION Alpena Community College Presents FALL SEMESTER ART PROJECTS Students of the art classes at ACC will have on display some of the projects they. have been working on during this fall semester. The reception will be December 16, at 6:00pm in the Besser Technical Center Lobby. Everyone is welcome to attend this reception. accounting, business management, marketing, law enforcement, and sport and recreation management. Michigan State University and Central Michigan University offer graduate level courses here during the summer. STUDENTS ‘Congratulations to the winners of the Foul Throw Shoot Out. Winners were students who had the most baskets out of 20. Winners of the men's division were, first place, Norm Sommerfield, shooting 19 out of 20. The second and third place winners ‘wete*tied-witheI8.-shots. each. They were Jim Barbara and Matt Hiske. A total of 13 contestants participated for the “men’s division. The women's division also had 13 contestants. First place went to Vicki McKiddie, shooting 17 out of 20. Sue Hubert was the second place winner with 13 shots. Third place winner was Lisa Smith, shooting 10 out of 20. Congratulations once again to the winners. ‘government, LSC Assists The Learning Skills Center (LSC) is the one place on campus where. students may find help in meeting academic needs. The LSC, located in the ‘Natural Resource Center, is funded by three sources: the college's general fund, the federal and the state government. The federal and state money are received as grants. The federal grant ‘Students, it is directed by Bonnie Urlaub. The grant amount last year, according to Urlaub, was $83,000. z The state grant comes from the Michigan Department of Education; it is called Special Needs. This program is Coordinated by "Audrey-Voigt.and— serves 100 students. Urlaub stated, last year the LSC received $98,000 for this program. In discussing qualifications for the grants, Urlaub outlined the fequirements an ACC student must adhere to: 1) if the family income meets government criteria for low income,2) neither parents graduated from a four-year college, 3)if a student is physically handicapped In Meeting Academic Support Services and serves 150 or has a certified learning disability. According to Urlaub, two-thirds of the students in the program must be low-income and} first generation college students or} physically handicapped. According to the LSC Statement of philosophy, "It is the ultimate goal of the Learning Skills Center staff to enable Students to function successfully in college through improving then academic skills and self-esteem. rhe” USC Provides the “following” services: tutoring’ for| _ Students who need help with their regular college classes, individualized cources in basic skills, directed studies in basic skills, counseling and advising, and study-skill workshop. The LSC staff offers a setting to allow each student's learning capabilities to grow. The center will give academic assistance to all ACC students who request it.
