MARCH 2, 1988 Page 2 EDITORIALS, Have You Noticed the Lighting on Campus? Need a light? I am not talking about for your cigarette, either. Chances are, if you have a night class, or are leaving the college late, you need some extra light to find your way in the parking lots. The poor lighting in the parking lots set up the criteria for an unfortunate situation. If you thought it couldn't happen in good. ol’ Alpena,it can! There have been a numerous: amount of unofficial reports that young women have been chased or followed in the parking lots! One recent unofficial report stated that the stranger chasing the girl triumphed over her speed, grabbed hold of her hair, and was left with a few strands of hair. Luckily the girl got away. Better lighted parking lots would put everyone in a spot light. The potential danger would not be eliminated altogether, but would be somewhat diminished. Improved lighting __ would help you get your key in your door lock. Also, what about spotting those ice patches? They are bad enough when you can see them in the day: “At night, you hit them with no defense at all. Although the answer is probably forming a little light bulb above your head, you can flick the switch to off now. Appropriate funding needs to be furnished before we can really tackle the problem. So the main problem boils down to funding, the college needs. more money so funds can be allocated to solve problems such as this one. LACK OF STUDENT PARTICIPATION There are a number of serious problems that can be discussed at ACC, but the number one problem that is directly related to the students at ACC is non-patticipation. There are variuos clubs on campus designed to promote student involvement. Only one thing -- not many students are interested in participating. Student comments imply that i i be and other jomeWwor outside commitments. is i legitimate reason, but being a club member should not demand a whole lot of time. Remember, the bigger the club, the lesser the responsibilities of each club member. Students, it is very important to stress that becoming a club member will be very benifical. There are a number of problems that many students are faced with here at ACC and through organization, students clubs will insure direct, immediate attention to those problems. ie clubs. ACC n mo involvement from the students. It is up to the students to protect their rights and the rights of their community college, From The Paper DEAR READERS: Because of the numerous complaints on the Paper-Works, the Lumberjack staff has conducted a poll on to find out just how valid these complaints are. The poll was conducted during the week of February 15, locations being VLH and BTC. It is the intent of the paper to show only the facts and not to take a bias side on this issue. There was a total of 197 opinion polls filled out,26 faculty. and 171 students. The questions were different between the faculty and students. The questions were not set up to influence any of the participants. The overall outcome of the poll is that there is a problem with the status quo. The faculty and students are not pleased with the bookstore. The paper intends to follow through with this issue as far as stories are concerned. In the weeks to come the bookstore issue will be turned over to the Student Senate. They will support what the student and faculty's opinions In the past this same issue has been addressed, but nothing has ever been done because of it. The extremes that’ Status quo of the bookstore is. changed. Respectfully submitted, hal unberiack state ACTION FOR BETTER LIGHT As Alpena Community College continues to develop and modify its resources, there remains one element in which many have been wondering about and desperately waiting for. This element happens to lay along the lines of the lighting system on the ACC campus. Don Witt, Director of Buildings and Grounds, shed a little light on the subject and set things straight as far as what we can expect along the lines of lighting our institution. Presently, Witt and his team have make modifications in the outdoor lighting system at East Campus. Such modifications that were made at EAC are basically the same which will be made throughout the campus. They included increasing the luminous along with placing features where lighting is not available, but is much needed. Indoor light fixtures have not yet been modified, but Witt is confident that it is only a matter of time before he and his gang tackle that problem. Witt is presently preparing the mold for lighting improvements. However, he stated that, "there is no definite plan yet." The plan, in theory, revolves around student safety. "Student safety is our highest priority," was Witt's comment. Adequate and sufficient lighting are definitely necessary to maintain a safe and comfortable night-time environment. Witt mentioned that the Buildings and Grounds team is finding funds for the lighting project through an energy grant which is coming from the federal government... The federal government, in turn, is receiving reparations directly from Exxon, who has been charged with over-pricing their goods, As Exxon pays these monies back, the monies are dispersed throughout the states and hit home at institutions like our own. When all is done and much money and energy has been spent, ACC will be lit up from here to Albecquerky and in the end most everybody should be happier than pigs in mud.
