Page 8 SPORTS MEN'S BASKETBALL Coach Barbera, (bar-ber-a) is beginning his first full season, but second year at the helm of the ACC Lumberjacks. The 1987-88 team won 10 and lost 19 with 3 tournament places, including a first in the Goebic Classic, a second in the Thunder Bay Classic, and a third in the Coxon Classic. In a very tough Eastern conference, Alpena with a 13-3 record qualified for the regionals and lost a tough game to the defending National Champions, Oakland Community College, 80-74 in Dayton, Ohio. "Our theme this year is "PROJECT PUSH", we are going to push each other to the limit, to improve our team on the whole", indicated Barbera. If coach Barbera can mold his players to concentrate on their style of play, he thinks they can really be tough on Eastern conference foes this year. He predicts a very entertaining game everytime the Lumberjacks play, The November Sth Maroon and Gray game will be a fund-raiser with an electric atmoshere and guaranteed fun for all. A slam DUNK CONTEST will be held at half time. Please attend and show your school spirit. PREVIEW WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Women's head basketball coach, R.B. Phillips has a positive outlook for this years team. Phillips coached the Ladyjacks in 1978-80. During the 79-80 season he guided them to the MCCAA's eastern conference title with a 18-5 record. 1978-79 was the Lady jacks first winning season. When asked his views for this year's team, coach Phillips replied, "I would like for everyone to work beyond their potential”. f A R. B. Administration, faculty and students are excited about supporting the United Way, as a way of showing the caring attitude f LS a East Campus Gym New sports being offered this fall are Jazzercize and swimming, said Richard Miles, Physical Education Director at Alpena Communtiy College. The new sports will not begin until the winter months. Jazzercize will be offered once or twice a week. Swimming will take place at the Plaza pool. Flag football began September 19th. There are seven teams competing. It will continue until all the teams have had a chance to play and the winner is decided. After flag fotball, volleyball will begin. Mr. Miles said sign-up dates will be posted around campus.The teams for flag football and volleyball can cosist of males and females. In November, around Thanksgiving, turkey trap shoooting for individuals will begin. There will be prize for male and females. Also during November free throw basketball will be offered. All of the programs are open to any ACC student or faculty member at no cost. Equipment is supplied. Open gym time for Intramurals is 8 pm - 10 pm, Monday - Thrusday.
