Sept. 28, 1988 WARSS SS i AC Dr. Donald Newport Beginning any new year is always exciting, but as I begin my first complete year as President of your college, I am especially enthused about our proud history and the foundation it gives us for a most exciting future. All of us are well aware of the important role which ACC has played in the lives of so many people throughout the area. In fact, it's hard to find anyone here who has not had some type of contact with the college, whether its been working toward a bachelor's degree, securing a job, or broa AS large and well regarded family. Much of this families’ success has come about because of our ongoing commitment to care about each other and I can only hope that such caring continues to be nurtured and its roots grow deeper. Our success has likewise come about because of our understanding of the value of building partnerships that aggressively identify needs and equally as well, g0 about the job of collaboratively meeting these needs in our community. Such efforts can only grow and multipy in the future. Recognizing that this business of education is a continuous pursuit and is consistently regenerating itself had become a recognized fact within our community and the student body of ACC. Such a recognition also challenges staff to undertake ongoing personal growth as well as the updating of curriculum, equipment, and facilties to meet g our’ All of this requires financing and yes-ACC, like other colleges nationwide will be tested to identify the necessary monies to provide the quality educational experiences this community and our students deserve. But, I remain convinced that such challenges can be addressed and that we will continue to be the recognized leader in higher education for northeastern ACC RECEIVES REACCREDITATION In a letter of formal notification to ACC President, Dr. Donald Newport, North Central Association (NCA) announced its continuing accredidation of ACC for the next ten years. The continuing accreditation resulted from a recommendation given by the four-member consultant team from NCA which evaluated ACC in April of this year. The team's reasons for their recommendations were as follows: ACC is fulfilling its mission by providing comprehensive programs, available outcome measures, and _ indicating satisfactory performance. It also is staffed with well qualified personnel who are carrying out their responsibilities with professional care. The college has resources available to continue to provide quailty education for those who choose to attend. They found ACC to be committed to continued self-evaluation long-range planning, meeting the needs of the Support area citizens, and the maintenance of quality and accountability. The college has meet ali the requirements established by the NCA. According to the report, the college's Learning Resources Center, the successful Alpena Volunteer Center and Internship Program, and the Center of Economic Expans:on are ACC's distinctive strengths. "ACC was fortunate to have a consultant team with members from the approximate size colleges as ours." Dr. Newport stated in an interview last semester, "the team virtually talked to all faculty members, they met with the administration and student senate, and had talks with random students in the lounges.” The team's perspective of the college proved to be benefical to the teams recommendation of a ten of special needs grants, the well-equipped science labs. the year They were able to assess ACC's strenghts along with how well we are improving i} = NCA Consultant Team our weaknesses. In 1963, NCA accredited ACC for the first time, this was the first ten-year accreditation that ACC had recieved until now. For the past 25 years the accreditation of ACC has enabled the students to Michigan. It doesn't matter whether you are a student or a member of the staff, we are each an important ingredient in making this institution successful and as such ourselves successful. Or as someone else once said, "When the tide rises, all ships rise also." My best wishes for a most successful new year where all ships ride a bit higher in the water because of our mutual concern for each other. Sincerely, Donald L.
