Sports Page Basketball On Nov. 25th the Lumberjacks played in the Gogebic Tournament. During the first game the Lumberjacks played the Gogebics, which resulted in a score of 115 - 100 with the Lumberjacks lossing. On Nov. 26th the Tournament contiuned with the Lumberjacks playing the Brainards from Minnesota. The Brainard team is classed as a first division team and the Lumberjacks are classed as a second division team. The Lumberjacks gave it their best shot but in the end result lost in over time with a score of 100-94. On Noy. 29th the Lumberjacks teamed up against the Wurtsmith Bombers in which they defeated the Bombers with a score of 96-72. On Dec. 2 the Lumberjacks traveled to Lansing to play the Lansing defending Natonal Champions. The Lansing team had the advantage over the Foul Throw Shootout _ Winners A total of 42 brave men and women truned out, on the two announced evenings, at the EAC gym to try their luck at 20 free throw shots, in hopes of winning a Thanksgiving day turke: TI event was very interesting as the participants competed for the winning prizes. Ties were established in both the men's and women's divisions. In the men's division, Joe Lancewicz and Devin Hart tied with 16 out of 20 shots made. The two men decided to draw numbers to determine the placement of 2nd and 3rd., the final outcome was, First place winner Jason Splitt who shot 18 out of the 20 free throws and the winner of a Thanksgiving day turkey. Second place went to Joe Lancewicz and the winner of a chicken. Third place went to‘Devin Hart, who is Men's Update Lumberjacks even before the start of the game. The Lansing team was able to go into the game with 5 sophomores, where as the Lumberjack team consisted of all freshmen. All in all the Lumberjacks continued to play hard throughout the entire game, but ended up coming up short, with a score of 117- 104, On Dec. 7 the First Conference game for the Lumberjacks was played against Schoolcraft. The game was played on the Schoolcraft home court. The Lumberjack's though determination held strong throughout the game as they took home a victory, winning over Schoolcraft with a score of 90-80. The Lumberjacks record after the Dec. 7th game stands at 3-5. Their NJCAA Conference standing is 1-0. The Lumberjack's coach, Jim Barbera had this to say," We are a very young team and I feel we are "Foul Throw” winners now the proud winner of an egg. In the women's division a tie was established between Wendy Huskins and Sherry Hyvarinen for the number one spot Both women made 19 out of the 20 shots given. Since the tie was for the number one position the women had a shoot off to determine who- the winner would be. First place went to Wendy Huskins and winner of a Thanksgiving day turkey. Second place went to Sherry Hyvarinen and winner of a chicken. Third place went to Jamie Landfair with 16 shots out of the 20 given. Landfair is also the proud winner of an egg. The whole event turned out to be a great success filled with fun and competition. Congratulations to all of this years winners, and hopes for a "Foul Free Throw" next year are high. \ just starting to get the team together and are adapting to Alpena life". Barbera continued with the team's goal, “ To win our next three games and to be placed 3-0 in the conference standings." Barbera felt that this is a realistic goal for the team to achieve. The men's games to remain unplayed in December are as follows; Away game at Jordan College tonight and a home game on Saturday the 17th against St. Clair. See The Lumberjack's December 10 Game The ACC men's basketball team hosted Oakland Community College Saturday, December 10. The score bounced back and forth the whole game. At half-time Oakland led 48-39. ACC Lumberjack, Embery Pope, tied the game 93-93 with a 3 point shot. There was one minute left when ACC's key player, Devon Hart was injured. Oakland pulled ahead to take a victory over Alpena with a score _ of 100-96. Leading scores for ACC was Dwyane Smiley with 22 Women's Update Gogebic Turkey Tournament The Lady Lumberjacks returned to Alpena with the Gogebic Turkey Tournament Championship under their belt. Four teams competed at Gogebic for the championship. The four teams included; ACC, Gogebic Community College, Scholastica and Brainard. The Ladyjacks opened the tournament with a defeat over Scholatica. The final score was 68-64. Leading scorers for Alpena were Tabatha Koger with 21 and Sherry Hyvarinen with 14 points. The Ladyjacks seemed to have no roblem eliminating Scholastica. The championship se Be and Darren Morgan with 20 points. The ACC women traveled to Oakland and came home with a defeat. Oakland beat the Ladyjacks with a score of 58-46. Leading scorers for Alpena were Tabatha Koger with 15 and Sue Munro with 11 points. Alpena Lumberjacks host a double header against St. Clair Shores Saturday, December 17. The first game begins at 6:00 pm at the East Campus Gym. si Wendy Huskins eet atl sa Jason Splitt game was played Saturday afternoon. The Ladyjacks captured the championship with a win over Gogebic. The final score for the game was 99-77. Leading scorers for Alpena were Sherry Hyvarinen with 21 and Tabatha Koger with 18 points. Sherry Hyvarinen was voted most valuable player of the tournament. Tabatha Koger and Jamie Landfair receied All-Tournament honors. The ACC Lady Lumberjacks returned from their four day road trip with confidence toward their upcoming season -Intramurals _ Volleyball ~~ Six teams are competing for the championship that will be held January 12, 1989. Richard Miles, Physical Education Director, stated that as of December 1, the Maulies were in first place. Tied for 2nd place were The Bays and Surgeons of Pain. In 3rd place were the Saps and in fourth place Super Spikers. Miles stated that when volleyball is finished basketball and bowling will begin. Sign-up dates will be posted around the campus next semester. Miles asks that everyone take some interest in the intramurals. more intramurals that will be offered in the Spring semester are Jazzercize and swimming at the Plaza Pool at Alpena High School.
