ADA®D ACC Card Design Winner The votes are in and Jano Yockey, a 31 year old second-year graphic arts student, came up with the winning design for the Alpena Community College Christmas Card Design Contest. November 30, Yockey was presented a $50.00 check for her winning design by Dr. Donald Newport, ACC President. The idea of designing a Christmas card for ACC , started when Dr. Newport came to Cathy Spigelmyre, Graphic Arts instructor, in the first part of Jano Yockey mail as to who the winner was. The Christmas card design will be an annual event that any student can get involved in, according to Dr. Newport. Yockey stated she was curious about how Christmas started and old customs; after researching the subject she came up with the theme "Winter Solstice." The feast of Winter Solstice was celebrated as the awakening of nature anticipating the coming of Spring and longer hours of daylight mentioned Yockey's card. The cover of Yockey's card was re Ages of Christmas December 25, better known as Christmas day is a time of joy's sharing and caring with friends and family. The festival was first celebrated in the early fourth century by non-Christian Germanic and Celtic tribesmen during a celebration of the winter solstice. The Christmas tree originated in France in the early 17th century where the custom traveled into Europe and finally made its way with the settlers to America. The decorated tree is derived from the so-called paradise tree, symbolizing the biblical Eden. We have the Dutch to thank for the idea of St. Nicholas’ eve, the equivalent of our Christmas eve’. During this evening the families gave special gifts to their children.
