Opinions Lumberjack Update The Lumberjack has two new additions to be thankful for this holiday season. As this semester passed you may have noticed several changes in the Lumberjack staff box. With each new issue printed, new names were added to the various responsibilities listed in the staff box. The Editor would also like to express her thanks to all of the Lumberjack’s supporters throughout the passed several months and for making the second new addition to the Lumberjack possible, a macintosh computer. The purchase of the Lumberjack computer was an item that the Lumberjack was in great need of. A computer is an essential tool in the newspaper process and is greatly appreciated by the whole Lumberjack staff. This is the fourth and final issue of this semester, and once again you will notice another change in the staff box. One of which is the first of the two new additions. The assistant editor position, which has been filled by the embers and was selects ug an application process to be the Jong awaited for assistant. The assistant editor position has been vacant for several issues due to the abrupt departure of a previously hired co-editor. The Lumberjack has been operating under the direction of one editor throughout the entire semester. The Editor, Mary Bartz, extends a welcome hand to her new Assistant Editor, Trina Redding, who will be sharing the editoral responsibilities for the remainder of this semester and throughout the Spring semester as well. The Bottom Line after almost a 15 year hiatus, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young have returned with American Dream. The L.P. contains 14 killer cuts, the best of which are: Name of Love, Got It Made, and This Old House. This Old House was performed entirely by Neil Young and it is the best cut by far. The most fascinating part about American Dream is that the album picks up right where the group left off. Fantastic vocal harmonies, important lyrics, and the presence of Neil Young make this record a must. Do yourself a favor and rush out and pick up a copy of American Dream. You'll never regret it. Liquor Warnings An issue presented in Congress regularly during the past 20 years won a victory on November 18, when President Reagan quietly signed the bill into law. The new federal law requires alcoholic beverages to carry warning labels. All liquor, beer and wine must carry the message: "Warning: According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs the ability to drive a car or operate machinery and may cause health problems." The law takes effect November 18, 1989. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms has 90 days to issue requirements on where the warning will appear on the package,as well as details such as its typeface and size. ACC Activities School Spirit. It seems most of us lack it. When I was at this college in students do now. We must take pride in our school whether we are eighteen or thiry-eight. Getting involved in school activities is a good way to show school spirit. Whether attending a basketball game or a dance, we must show our support for ACC. e dance attendances in the past have been small. By getting together we could meet a lot of people and have a good time no matter how old we are. A Christmas dance is coming up Dec. 17 at the Alpena Civic Center, I hope to see you there. If you don't have the school spirit, you will be visited by the ghost of ACC past. Athena Olson Fabulous Food If you like good food but have a hard time shelling out the bucks for a ‘Gut Bomb' then I recommend the food at the ACC snack bars The food at these places is really good. They have all kinds of food ranging from Mexican Burritos to the traditional ham and cheese sandwich. With new eee almost every week you can't mis On i of all of this the price can't be beat. On the average a meal costs around two dollars. Try getting a meal at McDonald's at that price. So hats off to the cooks at the snackbars for doing a great job of cooking the best food around. Smoking: Still an issue It was with great anticipation and dreams that last year I began my two years at ACC. I was made to feel unwelcomed because I smoked cigarettes and was subjected to rude comments and freezing in the cold. The first week of school I read a very nasty letter in the Lumberjack about people who smoke! I believe everyone has their opinions, but why do some people have to try and belittle others to try to look better? Why can't we make everyone happy and have a room to smoke in with ash trays and filters or purifiers for a cleaner campus. Some of the nicest people I know smoke. We all have our own ways to handle stress, but unfortunately most of them have pitfalls. I've heard a lot about the "ME GENERATION". If we are to succeed we had better begin to think about an “US GENERATION" and work together to try and make everyone happy. Eve Mandreky The Student Art Show which is being held at the County Library will be available a teviewing on Dec. 9 teception to honor the show fe been changed to Dec. 16 at 7:00 due to a time conflict with the staff Christmas party. Everyone is invited to attend. On the lighter side... Mike Rhea Conversations have always been a fascination of mine. Hours can be wasted away just picking Out the interesting traits possessed by most people. Consider the conversations of certain individuals. Spur-of- the -moment conversations can be odd to say the least. An Elvis sighting might be a very interesting conversation to eavesdrop on. It might consist of a few exclamations of excitement and surprise followed by a doubtful response by the other ty. "Look, by the science lab. it's Elvis!" "Sure, and Quadaffi is the next president of the free world.” This would be followed by a heated argument during which the king would silently make his escape past five student aides and a Biology professor unnoticed. Recently, I made a rather unscientific study on the minds of Ipena Community College students. show. fe Page 4 Geraldo, My Hero By John Pines Hey, guys! Who saw "Geraldo" on November 11? I'm sure we all know what happened. Our hero, gently aping Oprah Winfrey, put a few Neo-Nazi skinhead leaders on the same stage as two civil rights activists. What a crazy guy. So, not suprisingly, the Nazis mouthed off, something about “Uncle Tom's" and "“kikes." Lumbering would-be pro wrestler, Roy Innis, decided that the only way to prove these festering hate-mongers wrong would be to strangle one. You all know what happened after that. Chairs flew, as did bodies, and Mr. Journalism bins got his nose broken. borer assaulted on natio television, were thrown off of the set. For causing trouble, I guess. It's been nearly a month since the incident, and time and a few cups of warm cocoa have made me feel better about Geraldo's shameless Manipulation of human racist, but the a J eavesdropped on four subjects of the human population-I wonder if a few fit that loose description of life, but I included them way. Unintelligible speech from two of the male gender could be heard from the stairway of the Natural Resource Center. As the: came closer, I could faintly hear them laughing and soon speaking in something that was mostly Tecognizable as the english language.” "That song is so cool," exclaimed one, Suddenly breaking into song imitating the drums and guitar solos. It reminded me of the sound of a metal trash can being blown across an empty parking lot in a strong wind. Not too intellectual, but then again, they didn't resemble in the slightest way law school graduates. My next accidentally overheard conversation involved two young women. They were discussing how to go about finding a particular brand of socks in the mall. White Aryan Rejects were wronged, How many know that Roy Innis started a fight on another TV show earlier this year? And how many encountered the minutes that he was on camera before he decided to fight hate with more hate? I'd say about five. What a set up. There was no way the Nazis could have explained their views (whether you like it or not, it's still America) in that form. Geraldo was showing the world, once again, that cheap exploitation of problems will always be more accepted than actual solutions. The audience cheered when the skinheads (many of whom were trying to stop the fight by holding their friends back) were escorted away by the police. Racism has poisoned our nation, no doubt, but people like Innis and Rivera give us a bad name as well. Racial prejudice is such a confusing emotional issue. I hope people haven't taken my ideas the wrong way. I guess I really couldn't expect more from Geraldo Rivera (this morning he introduced a segment on three victims of multiple personality disorders by saying side of inter-racial understanding should have a better solution than violence, especially on national TV. Roy Innis didn't scare any tacists into rethinking their position, he just widened the gap. - Thanks, Ro; All in all, it was a very educational experience. That is, if I ever want to find a similar pair of women's socks, I'll know how to go about it. The third conversation took place on the sidewalk between BTC and the NRC. A man was shuffling along by himself, kicking stones in his path, and asking himself questions to which he would provide the answers a few seconds later. Either he was mentally reviewing a soon-to-be-taken quiz, or he's a prime candidate for the newest fashions in white straight jackets. My final interesting conversational insight took place when I was sitting in my usual hangout in BTC. A friend of mine stepped in and said, "Want: to MERP?" While I knew exactly what he was talking about (MERP is a fantasy role-playing game) I shudder to think what those students around and those who later heard about it interpreted ‘MERP" to mean.
