Page 3 Master Plan Includes Model Classrooms Two model classrooms are in the planning stages and will be completed for the Fall semester. The target area in BTC is room 107 A. In VLH no designated room has been determined yet, but, advisors have been meeting to discuss a location along with room renovations that will meet the needs of the students. The average student's age is 29, and because of the aging population, seating has become an important element in the planning stage. Lighting, carpeting, shades, and instructional communications will also be considered primary factors in the remodeling plans. The architectural firm that was hired this past fall will be on campus this month to discuss the development of their master plan for the college. During their visit the idea of scheduling one or two classrooms each year for renovations will be proposed and worked into their master plan. This type of renovation procedure will take some time to finish but once a working model is established, the process should progress smoothly, enhancing the look of ACC each year. By Mary Bartz Plans to Move Away From Block Scheduling Tt has been determined that an adult's retention span is 1 1/2 hours after a lecture and then begins to decrease. This information has made it very important for the college to examine the night lecture courses that are being offered oncé a week. It was revealed that it is exteremely difficult for the instructor to conduct a normal class session. Several reasons for this have been determined. One reason is the amount of retention of adults and the rapid loss that occurs as time passes. Another reason is that most. of the. next-class,period,is, a student misses a class they miss a tremendous amount of valuable class material. These reasons all have an over-all effect on the entire course objective. "The priority issue , which is quality of education in the class, is the determining factor here." instructor to reinforce the concepts". In determining the decision, two issues were examined: quality of education received in the classroom and _ student convenience. A survey was conducted among students to get their reactions to the scheduling change. By Mary Bartz Campus Book Store Open For Business Open ll am - 1 pm Monday through Friday The ACC Bookstore is currently accepting applications from students who are interested in working in the bookstore. Applications can be picked up from ll am to 1 pm Monday thru Friday at the store. ACC in Brief Voter Registration Offered On Campus ACC needs your help. In light of the upcoming millage election, a voter registration drive will be held in VLH on March 28-30. Times are scheduled to be, Tuesday and Thursday from 10am- 1pm and on Wednesday from 7-9pm. If you are not registered please stop by. If you are unable to register at ACC, please remem ber that you can register at the local Secretary of State Office, before March 30 to be eligible to cast a ballot on May 2. Residents of Alpena Attend Board Meeting In attendance at the March 16, Board of Trustee's meeting were Judy Christensen and Bud Wegmeyer. Christensen was a member of ACC's second graduating class and announced that so far five of her family members have attended ACC. Christensen is pleased that ACC has helped educate her family for their future. Wegmeyer is president of the Alpena County Farm Bureau and has a son and daughter that both attended ACC. Wegmeyer was present like Christensen to show support in ACC. Herm Bordewyk Retires After 19 years Mr. Herm Bordewyk has served with dedication as a full time faculty member since 1970. At the end of this semester Bordewyk will retire. Bordewyk will be missed by all as he has touched the lives of those who work, attend, and attended ACC. Enjoy your retirement. Newport Indicates "Warranty Concept" Planning During the March 16, Board of Trustee's meeting Dr. Donald Newport, President of ACC, talked of a “warranty concept” that is in the planning stages. He explained that the warranty will be a level of accountability put in writing. Looking at the staff, students and resourses ‘the college would be held accountable for the type of students that comes ‘out. The “warranty concept" would be a guarantee that students would be able to transfer to four year institutions or be at the job entry level. Newport will update the Board of this concept at the May meeting. Positions Available For 1989-90 School Year Applications are now being accepted for the following positions for the 1989-90 school year. Lumberjack editor, Assistant Editor, Photographer, and Advertising Manager. Applications can be pick up at the Student Services Office, rm 101 VLH. Return completed applications the the Lumberjack office, rm 110 BTC, or place in the Lumberjack mailbox, next to BTC main office. Application Deadline March 31. The Editor's position offers 16 credit hours of free tuition. Assistant Editor teceives 8 credit hours of free tuition. Photographer is offered a cash stipend and Advertising manager is recieves 10% of all ad sales. Campsite Number Sugggested For Negwagon Park The Advisory Committee for Negwagon State Park listened to comments from committee member Dr. Richard Moreau that 100 modern and 50 rustic campsites should be implemented to warrent a full-time official at the park. The advisory committee was initially formed for establishing proposals to assist the Department of Natural Resources in a master plan regarding conservation of Negwagon State Park. Next by Chuck Witt Interested in surfing, sand and just having a good time -- well that is " What's Next " with student activities. Our annual theme dance will be held on April 15, 1989 at the Civic Center. The theme this year will be " Back To The Beach ", bring your beach toys and surfboards and have a Chairperson for 1989-90 -- Michael Rhea. Mike is learning the ropes and planning activities great time. for Fall 89. Some activities Trivial Pursuit and Casino planned so far are : Club Day, Night were held recently with great Halloween Dance, Trivial Pursuit success. Both were well attended and all who played had a great time. These events will definitely be held next year. Speaking of next year, recent Student Senate elections gave us our new Student Activities and the Christmas Dance. If you the student have any suggestions for activities, please submit them to the Student Senate office in BTC.
