April 26, 1989 Page 4 Students Speak - How Do You Feel About ACC ? lose to home, economical, good start for a 4 year school. You know people when you go to the bar, its hard when you don't know anyone. It has a good atmosphere, you don't get homesick, good fishing in the area. Where can you go to fish at U of M? It's mellow. Dave Dowd Concrete Tech. 4040000400004 I love ACC. I feel you can't get a more quality education for the money. ACC has given me the Opportunity to get the feel of college while living at home. The greatest benefit for me is the fact that in 1 year of clinical I have received more training than most people get at a four year insitution throughout their college career, Mike Fournier 44440404000000-@ ACC is a great place to begin, especially for me. Having hopes of being a nurse, I know that Alpena Community College has one of the best junior college nursing programs in the state. Dan Hanks 0440000000000004 Steve Gonyea Spruce Farmer and Farm Bureau Member As a former student of ACC I appreciate the benefits of a local college. Being able to attend college and live at home saves a lot. The college can tailor programs to the needs of the local economy. Many farmers utilize the soil testing lab located in the college. Results are obtained faster and at less cost than sending the soil samples away. As an active member of Farm Bureau, I am able to say that the Alpena county farm bureau supports the college because of the many benefits and services it offers the community. It isn't a millege that's going to be approved or rejected on May 2 this year; it's a conciousness. It's a community vote on whether Alpena wants an informed and inspired population to spring new thoughts into their future or a pes 2s 1044400040000006 Intramurals let you meet people and have fun with people you don't normally associate with. Curriculum is good, some teachers leave a bit to be desired. Todd Brusati Nursing AAA AAA AAA AE ideal of insight vs. complacency, of having future civic leaders who are enthused and optimistic about the support they've once received from this town and now support they in turn wish to contribute to their community. As one of the ‘adult learners’ ACC has among its future graduates, I also speak from a perspective of regained respect and gratitude for an education that would not have been possible out of high school. Further, I don't think I'm alone among my peers in feeling the need to in turn contribute these lessons to the community which surrounds me. The greatest ones learned and the collective conciousness this city votes on: May 2 are respect, responsibility and an ideal of excellence. To let these things slip. out of a community's hands and prefer to just hope these qualities will ‘spring up' in people seems to me to be the hardest lesson Alpena, in the long run, would ever have to learn, Trina Redding Good start, everything transfers to Ferris. Faculty always has time to help. Janel Couture Pre-Optometry 4400004004404044 As a A.C.C. student, I have benefited greatly. Compared to a four-year insitution, A.C.C. has really saved me money. Living costs have been cheap enough, since I live at home, and tuition has really been inexpensive. Ata fraction of the cost, I have compleated most of my general education courses which are required at the university I plan to transfer to. Just think, if this millage isn't passed, you may not get the same opportunity to have these savings again! This college predominantly supports the youth in the community. If we, the students, don't vote for this millage we are not only damaging our opportunity for a stable future, but the opportunities of those who will pass through this institution after us. As someone once said, “America’s strength is our youth!" Please show that strength and vote for the millage request on May 2. Jeannie Londo Student Senate Freshman Rep. I Support the college's request for an increase in millage for the next five years. Alpena Community College offers over fifty programs to Northeast Michigan's Citizens. We continually evaluate and upgrade in spite of our low instituti The Learning Skills Center offers a varitey of free support services for all students attending ACC. These services include individual and group tutoring, personal. and career counseling, assessment testing, skill d st income. The college's purchasing power has consistently declined due to inflation. ACC ranks 26th out of the 29 community colleges in the amount of revenue available to support our activities. I would expect not only faculty, staff and administration to, on Tuesday, May 2 vote YES I expect all of our eligible students to vote for our millage increase as well. Let's show the community that we are united in this effort! Helen Malandrinos Nursing Director 4440000000004004 ACC has turned out to be better than I thought. The teachers are generally good. I honestly think it needs a playground. Seela Misra Alpena Community College provides an excellent opportunity for students like me who want a good solid base in the pursuit of higher education; while getting the most value for your educational dollar. I feel that the faculty here is excellent, the instructors really do care and they always have time to help. I can only hope that I encounter such wonderful people in my future studies. SEES p study skills workshops, summer workshop in college survival skills, and referrals to appropriate agencies or other campus services. The center is funded through institutional resources as well as two grant programs- Student Support Services and Special Needs. This blend gives all students at ACC the opportunity to receive the necessary support they may need to be successful at ACC. The number of students being served continues to grow annually with over 800 students receiving service in 1987-88. Bonnie L. Urlaub, director Learning Skills Center/Student Support Services It is up to me to make it be. This a phrase that has been crossing my mind a lot lately. I have been thinking about what ACC has given to me. This college has given me a solid start on my future education at Purdue University. It has taught me leadership and responsibility through my efforts with the Student Senate. It helped me financially when I could not afford to attend a four year school. In considering this I thought once again, it is up to me to make it be I hope that each and every one of you, between now and May 2, wilt sit down and reflect about what ACC has done for you. Hopefully, you think along the same lines as I do, in that, it is up to me to make it be. I would finally like to emphasize the fact that we can be the deciding factor in our educational career. We can make a difference; and if we all vote, this 1-mill increase should pass. Don't think that just one vote doesn't count, Monroe Community College can attest to that. After 12 unsuccessful bids, they finally got their request by one vote. John Pines
