Bonnie Urlaub,previously the Special Services Program Director, began seeing students this week in her office at 101 VLH. Urlaub will be on campus Monday and Tuesday from 12 to 8 p.m. and during the day on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Although she will primarily deal with women's issues, she is also available to men and can provide help in academic, financial aid, career, and personal matters, or will be able to refer students to proper people for answers or help. This week Urlaub intends to visit Kirtland, Delta, North Central, Mid-Michigan, Lansing, and Traverse City Community Colleges to find out what they are doing in their Women's Resource Centers. She also intends to survey students, possibly through English classes and in the juni to find out Urlaub says her office space is small but there are plans to remodel the counseling area next spring. room will then be designated as the Women's Resource Center. The center will be a place where women can meet in small groups to discuss personal issues, support groups will meet, books and tapes will be available and Urlaub will also e able to meet with women to councel and direct to other available sources. She also plans to get outside speakers to speak on specific issues. In addition to directing three grants at ACC, Upward bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services, Urlaub's qualifications include a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and Two Master degrees; one in Reading, the other in Counseling. She has been at ACC for 12 years. Urlaub is enthusiastic about the new position. She Says "the pest part of what I do is working directly with the students, trying to help on Campus Due to a change in ACC's student enrollment ( 56% are women) and an increase in evening class enrollment, the new position was suggested by instructors and other counselors. An "increase in functions" of Placement Director, Frank McCourt was what prompted him to appeal to Chuck Wiesen, Executive Director, with the need for a secretary. Nancy Seguin now holds the job of, as she describes, “organizing Frank McCourt's professional life." She sets his appointments, sees to his preparation for them and makes sure he keeps them. Nancy was chosen from about 30 applicants. She underwent 5 hours of general screening and another hour of specialized testing before being on Mrs. Seguin has" an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts from ACC and a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education from CMU. : A. previous 8 yr. employee of a local law firm, she grew bored and answered an ad for the job at the CEHRD. Some of Frank McCourt's titles include Athletic Director, Housing Director and Head Coach for the men's basketball team. In coming to ACC Bradford brings many years of experience with him. Bradford has recieved an Associates Degree from ACC in industrial technology, a Bachelors Degree from in industrial technology with an emphasis on automotive technology, and a Masters Degree from CMU in community education. Future plans for the automotive area according to Bradford include: -Reorganizing the program -Introducing a 2 year program Updating the equipment and the sho -Putting in a small machine sho) -Acquiring a 4 wheel alignment rack and -Eventually having a small parts department. The automotive class which consists of 11 students in a P Certificate (3 semester) Program according to ' Bradford is “improving by leaps and bounds on a daily basis." Bradford lives in Fairview with his wife and 4 children. He loves Alpena and “specifically enjoys working at the college and especially likes being the automotive instructor." When asked why he came to ACC Bradford replied,” this is the community college I want to be at.” Bradford wants to develop the automotive program into one of the better community college programs in the state.
