- FINANCIAL AID ACC can be even more affordable One of the best selling points at Alpena Community College is that it costs less than going away to school. Tuition rates are lower, and you save room and board costs by living at home. You don’t sacrifice quality, either. Even if your ultimate goal is a four- ear de; , it makes sense to save by completing the first two years at ACC and then transferring for the final two years. More than half our stu- dents are in transfer pro- grams, and follow up studies show that ACC transfer stu- dents overall have higher grade point averages as jun- iors and seniors than the u- niversity "natives." We believe that’s because of the smaller freshman and soph- omore class size at ACC and the efforts of instructors and staff to help students be suc- cessful. Placement test is important The ASSET measures the level of writing, reading and numerical skills. Many pro- gram texts require high reading or math levels. These skills are the foundation for success, and if scores indicate an area of weakness, the you will be ad- vised to enroll in classes des- igned to improve those skills. ASSET Test Schedule Normal testing time is two to three hours. Choose a con- venient day and time from the following list and arrive at the test room a few minutes early. If you'd like to know more about the test, contact the Admissions Office (356-9021 Ext. 229). Van Lare Hall Dec. 19 9am. VLH 117 Jan. 6 8:30 am. That’s where financial comes in. 2 Over half our students are awarded some kind of finan- cial aid, which will total more than $1 million by the end of the academic year. Obviously, we go the extra mile to find financial assistance for those who qualify. Finan- cial aid may still be available for 1991-92 year, but you have to get the paper work done soon. It can take as long as six weeks for the service which determines your eligibility for federal and state programs to return the necessary informa- tion. ” You can pick up a Financial Aid Form (FAF) in Van Lare Hall 107 at the main campus or from the ACC Huron Shores Campus office at ‘Wurtsmith AFB. Some students qualify to _ earn money for their educa- tional expenses through Col- lege Work Study, and Supp- lemental ion Opportu- nity Grants poe vibe another source of aid. Four State of Michigan pro- grams, including Michigan Competitive Scholarships provide financial assistance to eligible students. Even part-time students. Michigan Adult Part-Time Grants totaling more than 20,000 were awarded last year. In addition to need-based programs, many organizations have scholarships based on ac- ademic achievement. :The Alpena Community College Foundation is an example of one such source. Although most such awards are made for the fall semester (see list- ing on page 9), occasionally some funds are available. Bit you have to apply. Don’t miss out; get those forms in right away.
