- Jimmy J, Tafoya was born in Detroit in 1924. After graduating high school, Tafoya took a job developing and cutting film for H.A. Powell Studio. With the onset of WWII, Tafoya joined the U.S. Army Air Forces, serving from 1943 to 1946. One year later, Tafoya became a staff photographer for the Detroit Free Press. After 40 years working for the Detroit-based press he retired. Throughout his career, Tafoya photographed several Presidents, sports stars, and Hollywood stars.
The collection contains 108 35mm Kodak negatives (15 displayed digitally) depicting the coverage on behalf of the Detroit Free Press by Jimmy Tafoya during his September 18, 1970 visit. This collection shows the condition of the ship after 4 years of deterioration and salvaging impacting the now protect heritage site.
