- Description
- "Near the latter part of June, 1895, Moench & Sons commenced the work erecting their new tannery at Campbellville (11th Avenue near the Washington Park). The site was donated by the city of Alpena and cost $6,000. It occupied the ground where the Potter lumber mill stood. The buildings erected during 1895 were: Yard, 60 x 342 feet; three stories with an ell, 60 x 90 feet, also three stories; leach house, 42 x 80 feet; engine house, 54 x 100 feet. The buildings were massive framed ones of wood, except the engine house, which was of brick with an iron roof. On April 27, 1896, the tannery commenced operations for the first time, towards making sole leather. On that day the bark grinders were set to work."
