- Description
- The Churchill Mill was situated at the mouth of the Thunder Bay River and was originally built in the Winter of 1871 by F. N. Barlow. In 1877, W.L. and H.D. Churchill purchased the property. The mill was rebuilt twice after that. The mill employed about 55 men. The Churchill men were from Batavia, Illinois, and came to Alpena in 1872 after the big Chicago fire. W.L. Churchill was elected a member of the State Legislature in 1874, and was Mayor of Alpena in 1881 and 1882. He was also president of the Alpena Boom Company. H.D. Churchill conducted the business under his name from 1877 on.
