Description
"The Alpena Driving Club was organized February 19th, 1894, with W.L. Churchill as president and Dr. Ritchie as secretary. On July 4, 1894. the Alpena Driving Club gave their first race on their new half mile track at the fairgrounds. Over 800 wagon loads of cedar bark and 500 railway carloads of clay were used in constructing the track. The clay was brought from Iosco County and placed on the cedar bark. The Club also erected a new grandstand, 40 x 150 feet, and capable of seating 1,200 persons. The ground inside the track was stumped, leveled and seeded down. The total expense was over $5,000."
