Page 8 THE POLEMIC 1974 Henry Harris Still Playing Starring Role Bowling Begins All time Lumberjack scoring leader Henry Harris is playing in. different sur- roundings th1s year but the results remain the same. Harris who graduated from A.C.C. in 1973 with a two-year total of 981 points, is leading the University of Idaho Vandals in scoring with a per-game average of 17 points thorugh the first six games of the season . The flashy play best illustrated by his patented high-arching "rafter shot" has been so popular with the fans that it was the subject of a feature article in the local newspaper. Idaho, which suffered through a dismal 7-19 season last year have turned their fortunes around despite the addition of Sports Cutbacks Bring Suspension A rule requiring the sponsorship of at least five sports in league competition has forced the suspension of Alpena Com- munity College from competing as a mem- ber of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. The suspension which was termed tem- porary came as a result of the college's decision to eliminate inter-conference play in baseball, track, golf, and cross country. The cutbacks left basketball as the only re- maining sport in statewide competition. Although they are barred from winning the division championship, the Lumber- jack basketball team is playing· a regular league schedule and may participate as an independant in the thirty-two team re- gional post-season tournament at Delta College. A.C.C. officials have indicated that they expect tq re-enter the league in the near future, possibly as early as next year. Such sports as wrestling, bowling (both men and women) and soccer are receiving serious consideration for possible league play in the 1974-75 school year. SPENS PHARMACY 201 N. Second.Ave . That player is Harris and Vandal head coachWayne Anderson gives him much of the credit. "I'm really impressed with Harris' play . Henry is going to excite the Vandal fans this year and he has worked 'into the of- fensive pattern real well. He plays good defense and is very quick." Anderson would like to have Harris playing at guard where his talents could probably be better displayed but the Vandals strength is at guard so Henry has moved into a forward spot. He is usually matched against a talrer man where his "rafter shot-", familiar to . Lumberjack fans comes in handy. "I used to shoot against bigger players pregnant? Vandal fans got a good indication of what was in store for them in Henry's first game in an Idaho uniform when he paced the team's victory with 22 points . Another highlight this season was a twenty-four point production against Arizona, the 13th ranked team in the country at the time . "So far things have been alright. We're 4-2 right now and hope to have a winning season, Harris comments. "I felt like I have been able to blend in with the offense. My shooting ability, jumping ability and team play seems to go with this offense." "I think we've got a real good team," he adds . "If everyone holds their own we will do alright." Drugs--Are They Worth It? A person can be taking such drugs for several ailments and acquired from a num- ber of sources. The cumulative effect of the medication is thus greater than would be anticipated from any of the drugs taken singly. Such .mind-altering drugs as diet pills, tranquilizers, antihistamines, barbiturates and bromides can impair a driver's ability to function effectively on the highway . When used in conjunction with even mod- erate amounts of alcohol, the results can be !tragic. In measuring impairment, the yardstick must be the individual driver's ability to handle a car when in a normal physical condition ... that is, undrugqed . The addition of drugs to the scene creates a dangerous situation for the driver . His perception of time and space is altered and his driving equilibrium is thrown out of balance. The magnitude of the legal drug indus- try can be measured by the fact that just the promotion and advertising of beverage alcohol and tobacco, potent medicines and over-the-counter drugs costs $2 mil- l ion every day in the United States. The real Sunday punch of the drug situation lies in the so-called "syner- gistic" effect of drugs combined with alcohol. This refers to the interaction of drugs which, when taken together, increases each other's effectiveness. Th is means that a driver taking cold pills, for example, might after a couple of cocktails, exhibit all the characteristics of the town drunk. His reflexes could be slowed, his speech slurred , his vision impaired and his gait affected . This man becomes a dangerous driver, by any definition ... and only because he DON & MURRA Y'S Cold Beer on Tap Liquor- Wine also open Sunday 2 p. m .-8 p. m. 307 West Ch isho lm Street A lpena, Mich igan The Intramural Bowling League got off to a good start Thursday, January 17th at the Thunder Bowl. The teams met at the Bowling Lanes at 3:00 p.m . and bowled three games which lasted until 5:00 p.m. or so depending on the various teams. The three games bowled were not part of the league competition, as such . These three games are to determine the indivi- duals averages and handicaps . Competi- tion starts on Thursday, January 24th at the Thunder Bowl at 3:00 p.m . There seems to be quite a number of bowling enthusiatsists, so can be seen by the number or bowling teams in the League . Their team names are: The Dames, Dorm Dolls (3-North), 2-North, 3-South, Rogers City, Alpena Locals, Misfits, Hot Licks, Our Gang (Golden Z), Leftovers, Dee Bois (2-South), and 1- South. Styles in bowling could be seen already as the bowlers tried everything from body language to beating the floor in order to get that strike or spare that they needed or would have liked to have. Trophies will be given to the top bowlers and teams, so competition may become a bit hot in the weeks coming up . Support your team or even try your hand at get- ting a strike! By Anne Marie Swan &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& woke up with the sniffles and lacked the knowledge of the possible side 1effects of his pills and cocktails One reasearcher has observed that num- erous individuals arrested for drunken driving are also drug involved. In certain instances, the individual has a very low blood alcohol level but has also, in fact, taken some other substances which are synergistic with alcohol and which pro- duce all the appearances of gross drunken- ness. One bright note is the new federal pro- gram called Special Action Office for Drug Abu~e Prevention. With all 50 states cooperating and reporting directly to their governors and the Office of the President, the Program in addition to its broad objectives of drug treatment, rehab- ii itation, education and research, is at- tempting to develop in-depth information on the extent of our drug problem. By examining hospital emergency room admissions, coroner's and medical exami- ner's death reports , highway crashes and police arrests with a special eye to drug involvement and its impact on society, it is hoped that an entire range of new information will become available to drug researchers. Perhaps, then, the true dimensions of the drug-involved driver problem will become apparent for al I to see. TAP ROOM Coneys special on Wednesday Serving Ham burgers Corn Bee{ Ham Sand.
