Environment a lists encourage leaving a legacy ----------- Agency's assistant director of BY JENNIFER DONAJKOWSKI STAFF WRITER waste control; Alex Sagady and At 7 p.m., on Nov. 2, the Alpena Civic and Convention Center housed an open-mike fo- rum sponsored by the Huron Environmental Activist League (H.E.A.L.). The primary issue of the evening was the status of the LaFarge-Systech Corpora- tion. Nearly 300 people were in attendance, with a guest panel consisting of a moderator, and six other environmentalists to answer citizen concerns. Panel members were: Ed Begley Jr., actor and the envi- ronmental commissioner of the city of Los Angeles; Mark Richardson, environmental attor- ney; Hugh Kaufman, the Environmental Protection Amy Sanders, the Michigan and regional directors of the Ameri- can Lung Association; and John Pruden, the executive director of H.E.A.L. The moderator was Bill Haithgow, a state board mem- ber of the American Lung Association. In general, the assembly showed their support of clean- ing up the environment by vigorous applause. The audience was encouraged by the panel to exercise their rights by forcing Lafarge to improve their system of waste management. Kaufman asked the assem- bly to ". . . leave a legacy, that the children have a chance, that they are sound of mind, and have a full deck to play with." If students report license plate numbers to him of driv- ers who fail to yield the right-of-way, Kruse will notify the Alpena City Police. The city doesn't realize, believes Kruse, that vast amount of traffic generated by the four big industries - Besser, LaFarge, Abitibi, and Fletcher Paper- located right down the road. At 3 p.m. when Besser changes shifts, Kruse says you can't get out of the parking lots, much less walk across the street, and "the pedestrian signs don't do a damn bit of good." In addition to regular road traffic, Kruse says at any given time there could be 600 cars on campus. During a week, up to 14,000 people traverse Van Lare Hall, many crossing Johnson Street several times a day. He hopes to have action by January, but he says, "I just want to get something done, and I can't do it by myself. . . I don't want someone to run in my office and say someone has just been hit out there." Correction The names of basket- ball players Kaci Hoekwater and Rachel Tatrow names were misspelled the · .
