Five tons of salt used · BY NICK PHILLIPS STAFF WRITER What has been the thing that has plagued us the most this long winter? Snow. That white stuff that is so magical dtiring the beginning of the holiday sea- son, but quickly loses its luster in the following weeks, months if you live in Northern Michigan. PHOTO BY POLEMIC STAFF How tall is the tree? This year, however, has been a record breaking snowfall. The average snow- fall for Alpena is 86.6 inches. We've had179.5 inches this year so far, which is just a little bit more than double the average. In fact, we had so much snow this year that our maintenance crew at Alpena Community College, led by Don Witt, actually had to have the snow hauled off campus because they didn't have any place to put it. (Bless their souls) . Witt says that he remembers about eight years ago, they had about 500 pounds of salt to spread for the year. This year, they used a whopping 10,000 pounds of salt, so as you can see, that little devil Jack Frost really caused some trouble this winter. Witt also commented that there were approximately 700 man . hours of put into snow removal this year. After that, I think our maintenance crew should get a well deserved break in the Bahamas.
